i hear you on that one.  I'm not very good at communicating verbally, and I have a rediculous amount of awkward moments in my life because a lot of times things i say "dont come out right". But somehow I'm a really good writer. In writing I'm a very effective communicator (when I'm not rushing my typing to keep up with a thread that's moving faster than I can type).

I'm one of the least intelligent people I know. I'm told quite often that I'm "bright" or "smart" but I think people are just telling me what they think I want to hear. My lack of intelligence doesn't really bother me though, in fact it motivates me to work harder.

I envy that work ethic. My problem is that I think I'm so intelligent (which may or may not be true, but I probably have atleast a slightly inflated image of my intelligence) that I dont need to study and work hard at school because I'll just cram right before the exam and pass due to my "super" intelligence. this does not work out. I get B's and C's when I let myself think like this. So lately I've been trying to hold my ego in check and recognize my limitations, and so far its working. I'm damn close to a 4.00 this semester.

yes! talk about book smart...the mother of my child can be extremely intelligent...she is a doctor, she's gone through medical school..obviously it takes an exceptional brain to do all this

yet one good example of complete lack of how the world works, she's 26 years old, and she had NO clue that houses had air filters that are part of the air conditioning system that needed to be changed every couple months..she had no concept of it...it boggles me that she can be so damn smart yet something this simple slipped her by for so many years...

you dont have to be exceptionally intelligent to become a doctor. Sure, it helps (a lot i'd imagine) but I'm a firm believer that most people are intelligent enough that they can (almost) literally take up any profession they want if they work hard enough. Smart people have to study less than dumber people. But I think a lot of people with less than average intelligence actually do better than intelligent people because they instill a stronger work ethic in themselves in order to succeed. This work ethic serves them in all aspects of life, while smart people become lazy, apathetic, depressed, and unsuccessful as a result of this lack of work ethic that affects all areas of one's life. I know a guy who is probably one of the smartest people I've ever known. He seems extremely disillusioned with the world and doesnt work hard at anything. he's well on his way to being a junky and pops pills almost everyday while attending a mediocre college. but he's fuckin brilliant. I have another friend who is (and it kills me to say this because I love her like a sister) not that bright. She is on track to finish undergrad in 3 years, she excels in school, and has done so well that she is now spending a year abroad in japan, continuing her coursework on the japanese language.

intelligence isnt always a good thing.

I don't measure intelligence by a degree or time spent in school. I don't give a fuck what your job is. I measure intelligence by the ability to survive in any situation. To be able to handle yourself on the streets or in the woods. The ability to take care of yourself on your own is important to me. Intelligence to me is how well you have the ability to understand and apply yourself in the things you do on a daily basis and how aware you are of your surroundings.

so your definition of intelligence encompasses all areas of cognition and behavior? do you really believe that knowledge, motivation, independence, and awareness are all a part of intelligence? (not attacking your position. certainly everyone is entitled to their opinion, I'm just trying to spark discussion)

also, I don't think anyone measures intelligence by the amount of schooling you've had or a degree. there are way too many more important factors than intelligence that go into being a successful student.

reality is not completely subjective (some of it is obviously). 2+2 always equals 4. 2+2 does not equal 4 because we perceive it to equal 4. If someone perceives 2+2 as being equal to 5 then they are simply incorrect.

Obviously everyone has their own definition of intelligence but I believe that intelligence is the ability to comprehend and think critically about patterns and problems we come across.

What about people who are able to craft beautiful poetry or prose but find themselves useless in many practical problem-solving situations? Or someone who is terrible at math but can guess others' motives far further in advance than anyone else?

There are so many different kinds of intelligence I'm not even sure what I believe it to be.

I do believe that. I think if everything about your way of thinking was measured and weighed you could come up with a system of how intelligent that you are. Intelligence is the combination of many things that makes up a person. Knowledge, motivation, independence, and awareness are a part of that and among many other things that define how intelligent you are.

Interesting thread - i don't have time to read through it now, but hope to come back to it later.

I didn't take the poll because none of the options applied sufficiently.

I was someone who received detrimental amounts of positive reinforcement while growing up (i could do no wrong, in my mothers eyes.)

I used to be smart, did well in elementry and Jr. high and was fairly well versed in a wide variety of topics. I experienced a severe brain injury which nearly killed me, at the end of grade 9 + experienced minor memory loss and was pretty fucked up for a couple months.

They gave me a series of professionally administered IQ tests, and i scored above average.

However, around the same time i got into smoking pot and doing drugs and pretty much stopped learning in that time + i abused club drugs heavily.

Consequently i feel my capacities for intellect, creativity and language have diminished substantially.

I am not stupid, but not extremely bright either. I am not sure how i would fair in a university setting - but plan on finding out in the next couple years.

I think my intelligence (and lackthereof) is largely a consequence of stopping active learning.

Summary: I thought i was pretty smart for a long time and that was a direct response to an overly supportive mother, and being a cocky teenager. Becoming a drug addict was a humbling experience and i believe i "know where i stand" at present, so to speak.

That said: i do have redeeming qualities. It is unfortunate book smarts is often rewarded to a greater extent than critical thinking, in our society.

i test pretty high on real IQ tests.

so what are u saying?  would someone that scored low on said tests be automaticaly a for sure stupidian?
i just dont get it.

:strokebeard:

This post seems to say a lot about you.  Scoring high on an IQ test does mean that you're fairly intelligent.  It takes substantial intellect to solve the problems efficiently enough to earn a high score.

But this in no way implies that someone scoring low on an IQ test is unintelligent (it simply means  that they do not demonstrate their intellect in the manner for which the test was designed).

The fact that you inferred a converse statement (which was in no way implied) for the sole purpose of objecting to it would indicate that either you believe it to be true, or you fear that it might be.

I know a lot of stuff, and can learn and understand things quickly/well... this often gets mistaken for intelligence.  But I'm smart enough to know that I'm dumb about practical things like money, relationships, and self-motivation.

Sometimes I feel like I'm just a highly functional moron.

sounds to me like you are intelligent, but have weak impulse control, weak interpersonal skills, and low motivation (just based on what you said, I'm not trying to insult you or anything). I wouldnt put those attributes under the heading of "intelligence".

That's probably an accurate assessment... I just feel like impulse control and interpersonal effectiveness are important aspects of intelligence.

I agree completely.  And I find that recognizing this fact is a huge asset in learning.  I'm not intimidated when I approach subjects that are "over my head", because I'm 100% confident that if someone has understood a thing before me, then I too am fully capable of understanding it.
