Almost here!
    #11669336 - 12/17/09 03:39 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Just checked my syringes have been shipped out to me!  :dizope:

They are due to arrive the same day as my 23qt pressure cooker so the timing couldn't be better.

I feel pretty ready but I know I'm going to be reading and rereading 100 times over until they get here.

Right now I have everything I need, and I have a true hepa air purifier running in the closet I'm using, not sure if that is completely necessary but it makes me feel better.

I just read on a thread that Rye Flour is better then Brown Rice Flour for various reasons that I cant remember at the moment, can anyone confirm that?

Ah well anyways just wanted to share my n00b excitement with you and thanks in advance for sharing all the really great Teks and personal knowledge.

If you are getting a PC just start with WBS or Rye preferable because it's a little easier. Follow the teks to a T and let the grains dry completely, the PC for 90-120 minutes. You will get much better results than PF Tek, plus you can do G2G transfers to rapidly expand your mycelium.

Which tek do you recommend?
Ive been looking through them and am a little overwhelmed, alot of them are for bulk grows but i was going to start out with cakes because it seemed a bit simpler.

Any suggestions are welcome.

www.mushroomvideos.com for all things mycology. This is where all noobs should start. If you feel overwhelmed, start with the PF tek. Then after you finish and the jars are colonizing, try grains and liquid culture (LC). Try as many things as you can to keep busy until your first flush comes. It won't take long, but you will get a grasp for how to do things the right way. But buy those DVD's. It's the best money spent for getting started with the hobby. If you follow his directions, you can't really fail (in the long run anyway.)

She's smarter than she realizes. I have never had a successful attempt without a PC (although I am very aware people CAN succeed without one). Grains are way better and not harder, just a few extra steps. Plus the information available today is the best it has ever been. With pictorials and RR's videos, it's pretty much impossible to fail if one applies enough effort.

I completely agree.

I did a patch of PF jars as my first endeavor; steamed them in a pot. They all colonized and I had not one contam; made the syringe myself from a 3 yr old print that looked like it had been through hell.

Went straight to grain and haven't made a cake since, lol.  Never had any problems with those either.

All that just to say, I followed carefully selected teks the first time I tried something new, no deviations and didn't encounter a problem.

Yup I have never failed when I followed the teks to the letter. It was only when I improvised I failed. Grain being the exception. For some reason I have to modify all the grain teks when it comes to drying. It never completely drys on the surface unless I spread it out on a towel. I have also increased PC'ing times to 120 min. Those are the only modifications I do to RR's grain prep. Bacteria in grains has been the things most likely to cause me to fail and that was due to drying and PC'ing times. It's all about trial and error.

in regards to your rye flour question. it is not necessarily better than rice flour. you wont notice a difference in performance when using either one or the other.
one thing that sucks about rye flour is that it gets all sticky and clumpy when you mix it with water and vermiculite. making it more of a pain in the ass to work with compared to the rice flour.

but if you skip the pf tek then just do wbs and use docs wild bird seed tek. it is very easy to do.
