Purple stems on MJ plant?
    #11659562 - 12/15/09 11:41 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I was just wondering what Purple stems on a marijuana plant means?
Is it good or bad?

FYI these are not my plants. I'm not planning on growing any marijuana plants, prison just isnt my thing I guess.

Will do.

Maybe the purple stem stands for Purple Haze, mmmm.

In my opinion, purple is NEVER a bad thing. except grapes. fuck grapes.

Outdoor... maybe the temp is low. Sometimes non-purp strains will turn deep red to purple in northern climates. And by northern I mean northern midwest ish... What would you guess the avg. temp. is near you this time of year (or whenever pictures were taken)?

Well the temp is fluctuating from around 50-85 depending on the rain and cold fronts and such. The pics were taken recently at a buddies house(not telling where so ).

A few things...

A) I'm in FL, and this is not the time to be starting an outdoor MJ grow.
B) Hermies are a plant with male and female reproductive parts.
C) There is a mod who has your avatar and has had it for a while, I'd suggest a change to something more original, as awesome as it may be.

Purple/red leaf petioles like that can be the first sign of a phosphorus deficiency, however not always.  Purple petioles and stems can also just be the result of genetics.

From what I can see of the leaves, they don't seem to have a P def yet.  I wouldn't worry about it too much at this time.  Watch for necrosis developing around the margins of the lower and middle leaves because that is a sure sign your plants is hurtin for some phosphorus.

Cold weather and overly wet soil can lower the ability of the plant to take up P, so keep that in mind as well.

What kind of nutes is your friend using and what's the feeding schedule?

Well of course if it was a genetically purple strain it would be purple in any climate... whereas the ones that *SHOULD* still grow green leaves and stems could turn purple in the cold, like eTarded noted. Cold plants can't eat quickly, slowing down the amount of minerals absorbed from the soil. In this case phosphorous would be the most likely missing (or just too low) component.

Hes not like a big grower or anything. He just put a seed in some miracle grow and let it do its thing. lol. The rain waters it.

I was just wondering myself about the stems being purple. I thought it was cool looking so I wanted to know what it meant.

I was going to say the same except that if you are using the ferts' that are commonly available today I wouldn't worry about many deficiencies however, not having proper Ph and the resulting retarded nutrient uptake are a common problem.  Purple, lavender, blue, and red color is indeed genetic, sometimes brought on by cooling temps',sometimes not depending on strain...Let's have more posts about Cannabis on this forum....we could all learn more by sharing more information...It's X-mas time,a time of sharing.
