Poor performance on grain has me confuzzled

So I once dreamed about this experiment with whole grains.

I'd innocculated rye grain with seven different strains (Taz, F+, TC, T3, Hawaiin, PR, Cambo) innoculating 7 quart jars with PR and three half pints of everything else.

The jars of PR and Cambo took off like a motherfucker, with thick, rhopey bright mycelial growth. I transferred them both to straw and they've been doing great since.
The rest just look sad though. The myc is thin and weak looking. I just birthed all the half pints I have left, and several of them were unable to hold shape and crumbled. Two of the strains never even germinated in any of the jars they'd been innoculated into.
I used the same grain for all jars. All the half pint jars were cooked and inoc'ed at the same time, so the only real difference between them was the strain. I can't however, see strain being solely responsible for the great difference in myc strength.
Most of the spores used were from other traders, and could be suspect, however, even the strains I've grown before look weak compared to previous grows, and the two that never germinated were from known reliable sources.

Any ideas on what other factors could have caused such noticable differences between jars?

What technique do you use for getting the right water content? Did you vary the amount of inoculant used at all? Are you sure you waited long enough for the jars to cool?
Sorry I can't lock down a cause, but there could be so many things that might account for this.
