PC Trays instead of jars?
    #11650700 - 12/14/09 06:35 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Looking for a good link or can someone point me the right way.  Theorized that not having to remove from jar and recover that could skip a step.  Even wondering about using dry verm as in PF. Sure its been asked and discussed by my searching skills are failing me here.

You trying to say you want to have everything put in a tray and sterilize it?
It would have to be air tight because with sterilization its gonna be very susceptible to contamination.
I have pc'd bags of manure with plenty of rye in them and loaded them with a good amount of Copelandia LC and it still ended up failing me..though I could have been a little more cautious with my preparation it didn't save me much time or effort laying that precolonized sub into a tray. So skipping the full colonization of sub into a non air tight container that doesn't have any helpful defenses against contamination is almost 100% guaranteed to fail. sorry

if you want here is a link you can look at first sterile pc bags of spawn/sub.

just fyi if you go ahead and try this, from my experience so far the fresher the lc the better. try to use it with a month or two of making it with pan cyans at least. it doesn't seem to like being in the fridge very much.

was thinking of filtering lid so it didn't matter so air tight is not the concern that letting in something I dont want.  Maybe pc in a oven bag and not remove until casing.

with the tray you have problems of not being able to see how colonized it is or able to spread the mycelium gently around. plus the tray would have to be sealed so excess water didnt get in or escape and could potentially explode. the reason the spawn bags work when being pced and dont explode is because they get folded so nothing is getting in through the neck of bag and isnt air tight. otherwise when you pc spawn bags that have already been sealed you run a good chance of them blowing up in the pc because the pressure inside it builds up and cannot equalize with the surrounding pressure.

i am coming to find out that pasteurizing is really worthwhile compared to sterilizing. after pasteurizing poop in quart jars on the stove i have decided that in the end its better to use the pillowcase tek and dealing with getting your hands a little dirty.
with jars it takes a long time to get the inside of the jar to be the right temp without getting way to hot too fast compared to when using a pillow case already submerged in the water the temp raises about the same inside the poop as the water its in. which makes it a lot faster and more predictable. PLUS you dont really even have to figure out your field capacity with it so much because you can strain it and let it drain in the sink over night. this results in perfect water amounts without the hassle of trying to figure it out by dumping water into the mix.

This is what I came up with.  Dont know if It will work, but I know someone has tried it before.  I was hoping after colonization bottom of bag could become liner and not have to break up the grain removing from jar, but just case with a little 50/50.    It wont let me post pic(noob).  I used a large oven bag with the top of a large juice bottle cut off to use for vented polyfill lid.  This is sitting in the tray all pressed down evenly.  Innoculating with lc

Ok I see now.
It may work from what I am seeing but it could be a lot of extra work that could be avoided by jars.
I just hope all the stuff you are using is pc'able and wont melt.

What you've done is make a filter patch bag.  We've been using them for many years and they're commercially available from our sponsors.  There's no need to put a tray in the bottom though.  You can use the bag itself as the tray.  In addition, oven bags are pretty thin and crappy for our use.  You can get large filter patch bags for less than fifty cents, and last I checked, the oven bags were two to three times that price.
