my g2g's
    #1165027 - 12/23/02 02:24 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

My G2G's have been colonizing for about 2 1/2 weeks now.  The quart jars look as if about fully colonized accept for the very bottom...where no mycillium is growing.  Anyhow...the other 90% of the colonized jars is beautiful accept that I am noticing the beginnings of teeny, tiny pins.
Does anyone have any suggestions as what I should do at this point?  I'd like to see the bottoms of the jars colonized yet I know that refrigeration will retard
the present pin growth.
help?
Love, Cheeba

what other conditions have you got going on?
where is your heat source, is there any goo?
how are you incubating?
did you shake your jars?
could be bacteria if the grain was too wet or not clean....if the heat was from below, they could have dried out....

peace.

The temp is 82 degrees and they are in a water incubator.  No variation in the temp...very consistent.  No goo in the grain...as I said before, everything is beautiful.  I initially shook the jars when I first did the G2G...to spread the colonized grain into my prepared quarts of millet.  No shaking since then...as I have read that with the G2G tek..it is not nessisary to shake more than once.
I just don't think its right that miniscule pins are forming while the jar is only about 90-95% colonized.  Just the very bottom is no growth.  Which leads me to assume that during the initial shakeing of the jars...I did not shake enough to get colonized spawn down there.
Should I just throw them in the frige to retard the pin growth and screw the bit on the bottom that is not colonized?  Just use what is colonized and when I get down to the bottom...toss it?  or should I wait for the jar to completely colonize and continue to let the pins develope??

Next time, keep your jars in the dark while colonizing. They formed pins from being exposed to light.

As for this time, I'd say don't worry about it. Let them grow invitro, remove them from the grain once its fully colonised, then use your grain for whatever you want. I'm not sure that this will help, but keep them at 82, in the dark, and if you can, put them in a smaller space / increase CO2 levels. This should discourage more pinning and should help encourage the vegetative growth needed to finish colonization.

By the way, if you're have the jars in the same chamber as the water, you could experience a much higher rate of contamination; that's what happened to me anyway.

I hope this helps.

i was yakkin about this today with someone.
i couldn't figure out why you had pins before full colonization, as it has never happened to me.
it was the light.
and colonization slows down during fruiting. the hormonal catalysts force the energies of the mycelia to produce fruit....not myc....
you could just fruit them from the jars.....casing would prolly help (ala oss and oeric....)
good luck.

Thank you, that makes alot of sence to me once you explained it!!!  I had atleast one out of the bunch that did not display pin growth, thank god, so he'll be saved for other things.  I'll have to study up on invitro birthing...but more than likely I'll go ahead and just spawn them, tiny pins and all, into the poo and see what happens.
What are your thoughts on applying the casing soil AFTER the first flush??
thanks!
