I'm cheap.

Can I just put tape over inoculation holes and sterilize them, instead of going out and spending $6 per 12 new lids? Also, I have a jar 100% colonized, but on the dry vermiculite layer there is two, or three spots of green mold. Is the jar still good? I mean, isn't that what the dry layer was for? Thanks.

I find if they're not rusty, you can reuse lids to your heart's content. I would simply cover the lids with tin foil before you pc them. As per that mold, if you see that now, you can either cut it out and use the non-contaminated part, or toss it. I would probably just toss it though, too risky. Then again, I'm a bit paranoid.

Thank you, since I already made this post I'll just ask my last question. This is more of a poll I guess, I'm sick of flour as substrate, I hate all that mixing. What's the best substrate for casing? That you don't need a pressure cooker to sterilize, and can be colonized in jars? Thanks for answering my last two questions so speedily.

Hrm, it seems you've mentioned this elusive tek once before, but that's all a search yielded.

You might be able to cultivate millet without a PC if you presoak and then slow boil until they start popping. I have never tried it, but for grains, millet seems to contaminate the least for me. Rye berries the most... I wouldn't try rye berries without a PC. Actually, rye grass seed might be pretty good too, or whole wheat. White rice, or any rice for that matter, makes a huge sticky mess and is more of a pain than its worth.

You could also go the dung or straw route, where you pasteurize instead of sterilize.

Hey brick the rice tek will work very well, If you dry your rice with paper towels it will not be a sticky mess, make shure ya soak the rice overnite and after it is cooked ya just dry it so there is no water in the bottom of your jar. This tek enables you to get bigger flushes because of all the extra nutrients that vermiculate doesnt have. Make shure to sterilise really well because this tek can get contaminated a lot easier than the br&verm tek ..I know cause i pick my ass all the time...
