Always pasteurize substrates, especially manure, compost, coffee grinds, etc.
Never put boiling water on anything you want pasteurized. Pasteurize at 140F/60C to 160F/70C for one hour, measured at the center of the substrate. RR

Kow is what I use and I always pasteurize.

actually, you can use black kow straight out of the bag, everytime ive used it, it works. i used tupperware, mixed a half half mixture of black kow and verm wet it to field capacity. put a bottom layer of it, then took my brf cakes and cut them into thin disks, then out a layer of disks, then a layer of the kow again.. WORKS LIKE A CHARM!!! reason i say this, today was harvest day and i experimented with it and got great results. so my advice is try it both ways, pasturize, and dont, but i am cetain you'll be fien if you dont

I've got a couple of kow/verm/coffee casings going at the moment myself. I pasteurized just to be safe. I find the easiest way to pasteurize black kow without it turning to mud is using the turkey bag method I saw somewhere on here. Just mix all your ingredients and add water to field complicity. Toss it into the turkey bag, stick a meat thermometer into the center of the sub, and throw it in the oven set at around 200-220F. Watch your thermometer until it reaches 160F and then turn the oven off. Leave the bag in the oven for an hour, turning the oven on to maintain that temperature if need be. Simple as that!
I was kind of worried about the smell when I first tried this, but it doesn't smell at all! In fact, if you add coffee to your subs it smells like coffee roasting!
