Nutritional yeast
    #11630738 - 12/11/09 02:52 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I was curious if adding nutritional yeast to corn substrate would have any benefit?  Nutritional yeast is deadened yeast high in b vitamins.  Thanks for any replies

no, just corn as the substrate.  Like a grain substrate.

I'm curious about the use of nutritional yeast in general as well, not just for corn, since I have a bit container of it sitting in my pantry.  Could it be used as an additive to a bulk sub, and if so, would it need to be sterilized rather than pasteurized?

Yeast must be sterilized.  Yeast contamination is a pain in the ass.

Yeast extracts have lots of great enzymes and nutrients to get things going.  That's why they are often used in culture media.

Depends on what you are doing with it, really. Hard to call it spawn if you are fruiting out of jars, for example.

Whole corn (like popcorn) is used by number of people here. Don't add yeast- but do add coffee to the soak water if you can.

I would be using the corn as a substrate, not a spawn.  For a case.  Not to spawn growth to another substrate.

And what does the coffee ground do for corn?  Add nitrogen?  Acidity?  I usually use a buffer such as oyster shell for my substrate.  So I would think the coffee would help with nitrogen and a few other minerals.
