Tightness of Lid during Sterilization (steaming)
    #1162804 - 12/22/02 03:39 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I forgot to loosen the lids when i steamed my jars for sterilization. Is this going to contribute to the effectiveness of the sterilization.

If you have holes in the lids, then no, it shouldn't.

I never loosened the lids when I sterilized, and I never put holes in the lids either.

That's an area i'm not sure of yet..

I'll be boiling my jars in water to sterilize, now do I have the lids tight, or loose? And the water level? do i want the jar's covered or whats the deal? don't tell me to read the FAQ though I want a first hand answer....

How do you inoculate, G2G?

Skikid16,
Are you familiar with Mass spawning using brf? I was thinking about putting 1 colonized jar into a ziplock oven bag with 2 sterile brf/verm jars, and mixing it up.
You know if oven bags can be steamed? So i can skip a step to reduce contams.

Nope. IME, large amounts of BRF takes too long to colonize which ups the chance for contams, I read about the method that you speak of, but if I were to do a bulk substrate for spawn, I would jus use millet.

I did a little home experiment to find out which was better, b/c I read both ways to do it. So I did one set(2) with tapes over the holes while steaming, and the other set(2) without the holes covered. I found MUCH faster colonization in the ones w/out the holes covered. I figured it just let's more moisture into the jar, and gives it a stronger chance to survive.

So I would recommend leaving some way to let the steam in, wether keeping the jars loose, or leaving tape off the holes.

I was resorting to this method b/c of the lack of a pc ;(
otherwise i would use a wbs or millet.

Why not just do a bunch of jars, then spawn them into poo. I think this would be easier than trying to colonize in a ziplock.

I used some wide-mouth "Self-Sealing" mason jars. I read somewhere that if they are "self-sealing", meaning that they have disc-and-ring tops, then you should indeed screw the lids on tight. Make sure if you use these types of jars that you don't poke holes into them until you are ready to innoculate.
