Mazatapec Questions
    #11623915 - 12/10/09 02:57 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Purchased spores from "Spore Works" and inoculated on brown rice flour using the the high yield formula (60cc's of water). Most jars inoculated quickly with multiple growth spots but a few have colonized rather slowly. I had them above the fridge at first but realized my temp was not adequate 75% of the way through colonization. I now have the remaining jars above a light at approx. 86 degrease.
I birthed half of the cakes that had colonized at say 70 degrease about 2 weeks ago using the dunk and roll. The terrarium is maintaining 90% humidity with a few sprays and a temp of about 74 degrease.
Since I birthed the cakes I have seen little change. Mostly the mycelium colonizing the verm layer from dunk and roll (although slowly). It seems like I should be recognizing some sort of growth? Is it because I inoculated at the same temp as my terrarium? Not having the 10 degrease come down in temp, is it stinting my growth? Also what will raising the temp during the last 25% of colonization do to my remaining jars?
  Any advice would be appreciated...

86 is a bit high. Normal room temp is fine. The come down in temp is not necessary for cubes. If your cakes are not fruiting there must be something wrong with your set up. Are you fanning 5 or 6 times a day? What kind of light are you using?

I'm using a shotgun terrarium that seems to be maintaining humidity and temp decently. I usually Fan in the morning before work, then they go 8 hrs. Then fan once  as soon as I get home, once mid evening and then one more time before I crash.I usually only have to spray once in the evening.
The light I am using is one of those small aquarium florescent. One bulb like 15 or 25 watts. I have a small radiator heater that I have regulated to about 74degrees almost constant. The light was mostly to heat the jars.

Was advised to place cakes directly on perlite. Going to try that for a week then redunk with my last 3 cakes if nothing is going on.

i meant the cakes. myc grows into the perlite. then you've got organic matter than can rot in there. not so concerned about the rust from the lid.

I moved the cakes back onto the lids. Someone told me putting them directly on the perlite brought them into closer contact with moisture source. I was also thinking of not using the light at all anymore. If the jars will inoculate at room temp and I dont need that added 10 degree's of temperature. I've been controlling the temp of  the terrarium with a small radiant heater. Natural light through window and ceiling light should be fine, correct?

Its best to give them a good 12/12 light cycle using a 6500K(Day light or cool blue) florescent light. Also cakes should not be directly on perlite it wont help them

I was going to start re-dunking cakes today. I have 5 cakes in the terrarium at the moment. Inspected first 2 cakes and did not notice anything unusual. No pins, stinted mycelium growth, etc. When I flipped the third cake over, their they were. About a half dozen small bulbous starts with brown tips.I'm really excited again. Even the 2 most recent cakes are all showing growth. I do notice that it is all on the under side. Should I flip the cakes on their side? I wonder what the deal with the first two cakes were? Anyhow those are soaking again as I write this, and I have 3 more cakes should be ready by end of week.

I just finished looking at spore strains online. Any recommendations considering I'm still new at this?

:lmafo: This what I call Shea style. To the OP: any cube is good or bad, easy or tricky, strong or weak depending on the way YOU cultivate it.

Yeah, do it. Bottom pinning can be a pain if the shrooms keep tipping the cake over, so just tip it over yourself.
