Cobweb in BRF jars?
    #11622757 - 12/10/09 11:29 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I think I may have cobweb mycelium growing in the bottom of one of my BRF jars.

When it first showed up a few days ago it looked very light (rather than dense), airy, wispy, and a bit grayish in color. It also seems to be colonizing at a much faster rate than the definite mushroom mycelium that is colonizing nearer the top of the jar.

In the picture which views the bottom of the jar you can see that this mycelium does display a rhizomorphic pattern of growth but I think this is also true of cobweb mold and I certainly haven't had enough experience to know the differences between the two other than distinguishable by color.

I really can't tell if the mycelium is actually grey or just very weak so as to appear less than white, being a semi-translucent membrane spread across a darker background that is the substrate.

Hopefully those of you, who have had more experience seeing cobweb molds could chime in here with your verdicts. I have the jar quarantined for now.

In this first wide-angle picture, the coinspot of mycelium growing nearer the top of the jar is definitely my mushroom of choice. The spot growing from the bottom of the jar is the one that concerns me.

It does seem odd that you would mycelium that far down in a BRF jar, I presume you used a spore syringe?

Did you inject in that area?

To me it looks a bit like mushrooms mycelium but I am not sure about where it is growing from, I would rather leave in quarantine and wait to see what happens when the two patches meet up.

I did use a spore syringe but, the syringes were 5 years old.

Most of my jars are showing growth at only two-thirds of the inoculation sites but, given the age of the syringes I won't complain at all.

I didn't even inoculate in that particular portion of the jar though. At first there was just the mycelium in the upper portion of all jars inoculated then suddenly this spot popped up overnight with incredible growth rate and having a gray color in comparison to the mycelium growing up top.

In 24 hours it appears to have grown by approximately 50% and it no longer looks gray except on the very fringes where the growth appears very wispy rather than rope-like. The center of the germination point however is now as white as a snowflake.

In a few of the syringes, many of the spores had already germinated, forming mycelial particulates that could be seen floating in the water. I have no idea when the spores germinated however as the syringes were 5 years old (stored at room temp).

Does LC mycelium generally colonize differently in this manner than MS? Could some of the "mycelium water" have "swam" to the bottom to colonize that way?

Updated with pics. Looks like healthy mycelium to me.

Jar Bottom

A super close-up of the mycelium colonizing the bottom of the jar.

When I first spotted it, the mycelium appeared so gray in color that I just knew it must have been cobweb. It continues to grow faster than the original colonizing portions of the jar. I'll going to keep an eye on it and see what happens when the two colonizing portions merge.

The last picture looks like cobweb mold I've seen in a grain jar. I'd like to know how it turned out.

I think it was cobweb. The upper healthy spot stopped growing while the lower wispy myc took over most of the jar. I boiled it and then emptied the jar outside.

Also, I found cobweb in the dry verm layer of one of the other fully colonized and healthy jars of the same batch when I birthed them. I just scraped off the dirty verm, gave it a rinse under tap water, then dunked it. It fruited just fine. Gotta love the ease of PF-Tek.

Both the myc and the cobweb can kinda grow together for a while in the jars making it even harder to tell. I had cobweb infect an LC. I unknowingly inoculated it into some jars and transferred them to bulk before I knew there was a problem for sure. I can tell now by the wispy growth. I can also tell by the faint smell of cobweb after the jars are finished, opened, and disturbed. It's very faint by it has a slight almost sweet musty smell.

I may culture a jar of cobweb and a jar of cube to show everyone detailed pictures of the subtle comparisons in growth patterns and color, though only sometimes the color is really that different.

Cobweb will make very light see through white strands in the 1/4" to 1/2" outer edges of the culture in grain. Cobweb's dainty "see through" growth in the last picture in beatlejuice's post above is a good example of cobweb in a jar.

So are the Greyish Cobbwebs in the jars something to worry about or will they still fruit fine? Is it actually myc? or is it contam? Do I need to toss them?
