WASHINGTON — Eben Bayer was trying to come up with an eco-friendly building material for a class assignment at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute when he remembered something from his childhood on a farm in Vermont.

Mushroom roots, Bayer recalled, could bind leaves and wood chips together. After graduating from Rensselaer, he and a former classmate, Gavin McIntyre, figured out a way to combine fungi and agricultural waste to create a low-cost packaging substance, called Eco Cradle.

They're pitching the material as a replacement for petroleum-based polystyrene. Bayer said Eco Cradle also is being tested as insulation at two building sites.

"This can be used to ship everything from TVs to toasters to tables," Bayer said.

He and McIntyre graduated from Rensselaer in 2007 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design and Innovation. Since then, they have founded a company called Ecovative Design to market Eco Cradle and other environmentally friendly products made from the material.

The company, which recently moved to new offices in Green Island, N.Y., grows and disposes of Eco Cradle locally to reduce energy and shipping costs. It is completely powered by hydro-

electricity.

Eco Cradle grows on its own in the dark in a few days. The mycelium fibers in mushroom roots combine with rice husks or cotton burrs to form a product that requires minimal energy to produce and leaves no waste.

"It can be composted in your garden," Bayer said.

The silica, from rice husks, makes the product fire resistant. Since no spores are involved, the material produces no allergens.

"We believe this product is a game-changer that has the potential to fundamentally alter the market for packaging materials by offering consumers an environmentally friendly packaging option," Frank Murray, president and CEO of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, said in a statement. The authority promotes environmental protection, preservation and promotion initiatives in New York state.

Bayer said Ecovative has four clients, including Comfortex Window Fashions in New York. Comfortex is using Eco Cradle to package its line of eco-green roller shades, said John Fitzgerald, executive vice president.

"For those customers who buy these shades, we don't want them to be put off by bubble wrap and Styrofoam," Fitzgerald said.

Future plans include opening a processing facility in the Midwest and eventually taking the product international, Bayer said.

"We want to be leaders in sustainable materials," he said.

Awesome, "It can be composted in your garden," Bayer said. If only more people thought like this
