Brainstorming Ways to Secure My New Place

I plan on moving out of my complex and renting a house in the next few months. I've already found a great location.
Positives:
The land lord lives out of town and runs his own business. He told me that he's only come to the property twice during the five or six years the previous tenants rented and that was for maintenance and repairs. Rent will be paid on time and he'll have no reason to swing by for shits and giggles.
The front and back door are both dead bolted. The front door has an extremely heavy, solid-iron storm door that latches shut. Most of the windows are above ground level, except for the two front windows that will be in my room.
Reasonably quiet neighborhood. People keep to themselves.
The land lord seems pretty willing to let me make minor alterations to the house. He's letting me pull up the carpet - hardwood floors run underneath.
I will be using the spare bedroom for any and all out of sight activities. A lock will be installed on that door.
My current (and future) room mate knows the score and has been fully made aware of how to handle knock and talks, along with any consequences that will come down from above. This is a mature person that can be trusted and they know to keep their mouth shut.
The house is on a pretty steep hill above the street.
Negatives:
Burglaries have been up around the side of town I plan on moving into. I'm debating fencing off the rest of the yard and getting a large breed dog, such as an Akita.
The neighborhood is in a school zone.
-
Give me suggestions on how I can reasonably increase the security in my new place without much expense or extensive alterations, Shroomery. My concerns are primarily centered around deterring random burglars.

Cheap security camera pointed at your front doorstep!
Maybe not as cheap as you'd like, but you can find one for under a hundred bucks, and they're a lot of fun for fuckin' with your friends as well as seeing who's at your door without playing curtain-commando.
Or you could install a peephole
My security system consists of a pump shotgun and a dachshund, so I dunno.
A fence and a large dog (hell, any dog can alert you to a stranger's presence waaaaay before you'd notice) sounds like a good idea.
If you're worried about break-ins when you're not there, window/glass shops usually sell bars you can install over your windows.
I can teach you how to make a booby-trap from a twelve-gauge round and a mousetrap if you want.

I am on a drug. It's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available because if you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body

Awesome.
The first thing you should do is change the locks.
Keep all the windows locked and do what you can to prevent burglaries - if you get robbed the police can come in when you aren't home without a warrant.
Maybe install fake security cameras in the back and put a LED on them so they get noticed.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'm also planning on installing kick plates on both the front and back door, along with flood lights and window bars. A privacy fence or finishing off the chain link fence partially surrounding the property may come later.

Don't do too much to make it seem like you're hiding something, but what you have right now seems fine and practical for anyone securing a home.

Agreed, I mean c'mon bars on the windows? I would just change the locks. And put locks on your "special room". You should be fine. Getting a dog would be good too.
