Living in the Amazon Rainforest

It almost seems like a great idea aside from all the deadly animals that roam the place ... I am doing some reading on the amazon and supposedly there are over 200 tribes there, which makes sense- i can't imagine a better place to indulge in psychedelics and take on the Shamanistic life.
i'd imagine you could get a wide variety of foods to live off the land and you can grow all your own drugs without government intervention For sleeping all you need are some sleeping bags and a nice tent which you can set up anywhere... probably need a shitload of bug spray, maybe even some suits for long travels to keep away dangerous bugs and animals... a few guns in case you run into smugglers or animals.
Sure you'd be away from electronics and money but who gives a fuck..... i think it would change who you are to live in a place like that , but it would also mena giving up many aspects of your current life. i think with a few friends it could be an amazing experience. im thinking about at some point in my life imagine the music you could come up with in the rainforest, it would be fucking epic
How realistic is this plan? Could you live at peace in the amazon?
or if not the amazon, maybe there are some better places filled with psychedelic using hippies..

Nah, you could try. But it would be sketchy with all the poisonous animals, plants, fungi, and all other organisms.

Sounds realistic! I haven't lived in the Amazonian jungle. But I did live in tentcamps during 3 years growing up in South Africa. So its possible to do it, the only thing that could stand in your way...is you!

Tribes have adapted to live there and know all of it's dangers and how to handle themselves.
You wouldn't last more than a few days if you were lucky.

I know someone who lived deep in the Peruvian jungles of the Amazon for 3 years with various isolated tribes. He said he loved it there, but that it's not for the faint of heart and that women NEED to have a male travel companion. (if you're not a woman, that last bit won't apply)

Not necessarily..the great thing about being human is..that you can adapt quickly...tribal people have that..and so does everyone else..just not many people get/have to use it.

Even Survivor Man got his ass kicked there. He got foot fungus which made every step unbearably painful. The Amazon literally tries to consume you as a matter of course.

i think that would be quite an experience, but i can tell you one thing for sure... your objectives will change radically soon after arriving there. the rainforest isn't a place to relax and grow drugs man, you'll be occupied with survival 24/7... it would be a sheer test of the will to live. my advice would be to get involved with some sort of research and get it all paid for, and all the sweet gear.

I agree..like with anything..knowledge first is key! Get all the info you can, from as many different resources as well. Perhaps they have some courses you could take in survival at a local campground or lodge
Hendostan is right again about your time being resorted into jist 'staying alive'. You won't have time to think about growing plants when you have to find and fix your own food, make your own shelter and making resources.

and be prepared to eat things you would never think you'd have to eat to stay alive. My family and I stayed alive for 4 weeks in bosnia on nothing but boiled leather, rain runoff from a drain, ants, grasshoppers and bits of old moldy bread!

There's still the fact that there are wild animals, some being poisonous and some that will eat you alive, disease, and if you mistake a plant for another one, you could die .

Yeah, what if you get a parasite in your penii? I've heard of it happening.
If you go to the Amazon OP, get a guide to teach you the ways of the jungle and to avoid parasites in your penis.

If you purchased land that was a walkable distance to a road or river which connected to a servicable town or city it would be do-able.
You would have ALOT to learn.
Living on a plot of land in the jungle with a property where you grew food and raised animals and did what you want... is possible, if you took the time to figure out how its done.
However - Living off the land, in a tent, and hunting/foraging would be extremely unrealistic.

there's a reason rainforest is cleared for these purposes... not realistic at all without disturbing the area to a fairly severe extent. rainforest soils are ridiculously acidic from all the organic matter, and rarely see any significant development. not to mention the compaction from animals if one wanted to raise some. lack of light from a closed canopy and the massive energy requirement to support such a ridiculous amount of biomass in a rainforest place daunting limitations on agriculture... i'd say living in a tent and living off the land is far more realistic than this
not to rain on anyone's parade...

I suppose i can't speaker directly about agriculture in the Amazon, but they do raise goats, sheep and chickens!
Where i was outside of iquitos there were large clearings which would ideal for food cultivation, i am sure there must be way's to amend the soil..
But besides that - it would all be very hard.
If you were looking to do this sort of thing, it would probably be simpler in SE asia.

Both Survivorman and Ray Mears have shows about survival in the Amazon rainforest, and for both it was quite difficult. Survivorman had natives to instruct him on survival before his ordeal (edible & useful plants, which are dangerous, etc), and Ray Mears lived with the natives for a little while. IIRC Survivorman had a nasty foot fungus like someone else mentioned, and after a couple days he had ants and bugs crawling over all his gear (even the stuff he hung from trees).
At least Ray Mears got to join a native snuff party...
