I have heard recently that finding these things is hard in the midwest. Will it be even more hard to find since its the middle of winter?

Pick up a phonebook and call around. How would we know what's around you? If you live in a city call the hydroponics shop first, best place for perlite, coir, vermiculite, misters. ~P~

Vermiculite and perlite are used as potting soil additives. They help with retaining moisture (perlite) and breaking up compact soil (vermiculite). Bonsai growers might use them too?

verm, perlite, and coir should be able to be found year round in any city that has an indoor gardening supplies store.

I was just kidding. Just if I go to a landscaping store, and I need to ask where it is. Not like they would ask me what I was using it for.

www.associatedbag.com
here. mail order, and the first 5 things are free as samples.
vermeculite sold as a packing material, so no growing associated with it
in anyone's mind.
Also sell sealable, autoclavable bags of many, many different sizes;
no filter patches tho.
Give it a try and leave the garden supply stores in peace lol.

Theres nothing illegal or suggestive when buying verm or perlite. Its for plants of any kind. Theres nothing to be worried about. No need for a cover story or any of that. When I first went looking for Verm the guy an older guy at ACE was helping me look and asked what it was for. He was just curious, I told him for mushrooms and he was intriged and was interseted in growing mushrooms for himself, we ended up having a 15 min conversation about it. He probably went home and starting learning for himself. He had no idea mushrooms were that easy to grow. Of course I told him that it was for edibles not actives.

Exactly. Saying you grow edible mushrooms doesn't incriminate you in the least.

when people ask me what i'm buying something for, i always reply "I'm growing illegal drugs and making weapons, what the fuck business is it of yours?"
you'd be surprised how casual a store clerk can act when you say this to them.

I have to have it order through our local farm & home store, but I never get any static. I'm the only one in the area that uses verm. Every time I go in their they are like "oh, it's the vermiculite guy."
I did get asked what I used it for in the winter- replied it was for seedlings/starter plants for next spring.

LOWEs has Verm, lots of different kinds. and miracle-gro perlite. Walmart wont carry vermiculite, but it will have perlite. Also pet stores have vermiculite if you're lucky. They carry something called "repti-lite" which looks like super fine verm. but i dont know if it is usable as a substrate. Brown rice flower is in the "latin foods" section here in the midwest lol. i strongly suggest getting a hygrometer. they help so much in the long run. Instead of just guessing and hoping, you KNOW and it makes the difference. Good luck:)
