Anyone had success with first time casing?
    #1160068 - 12/21/02 10:20 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I havent grown yet, but I really want to innoculate here in a couple of weeks. I plan on using Brown Rice Grain and grinding my own flour, then using quart sized jars. I'm going to break up the mycelium and case, but I'm a little worried I might get some contams. Has anyone jumped in and done casings before cakes with good results?

Try Hongus Tek. Or you could case with just perlite. I've done it and it works/

I went straight to casings, never once tried just cakes, and it worked for me. Just use straight vermiculite casings, since it's much less likely to contam.

Quart jars? That's big. The cakes will take a long time to colonize.

You are going to be waiting forever for a quart jar of rice to colonize. Use a smaller jar - you'll have a better chance of achieving colonization without contamination.

It cant take that much longer than pint size...can it? I might try pint size, but time isnt to big of a factor, a couple weeks extra wait isnt a problem. I was originally going to try a bird seed tek, but everyone seemed to be having problems with adding the right ammount of water. Does bird seed colonize faster or something?

BRF(thats Brown Rice Flour) and BirdSeed is no compitition. Birdseed requires a Pressure cooker, but it's muuuuuuch faster. DONT do a 1 qt BRF jar, much too slow. however, A 1pt BRF jar will move right along if the conditions are right.

A 1 Qt BRF jar would prolly contam before it ever finished colonizing.

Well screw the 1 Quart BRF then. I would do Bird seed if I found some good directions. Do you know of any teks out there that clearly say how much water you need? I'll invest in a pressure cooker as well.

I never even did cakes, just casings right away withou a problem. Actually, it was very easy, after studying it for weeks though of course. It looks harder on paper.

I agree with Straw dog on this one. Use smaller jars..... just do more jars. Thet will reach 100% colonizing a lot faster than an entire quart, and the longer grains or BRF/verm  take to colonize completely , the more chance for contams to set in. Crumble your cakes into marble size pieces in a zip lock bag and place in a tupperware or foil container and case. Good luck

My friend is in the middle of the process now for the first time. They've been in the inc chamber for about 2 days now recolonizing.... i'll let you know how it goes.

my friend has never been able to get CAKES to work, so he might not be the best source, but he says that casing has worked 100% of the time for him. do the PF tek to the letter, and when cakes are fully colonized, just break them up by hand. you can use the bottom half of a milk jug, a cereal bowl, tupperware, just about anything to hold your substrate. you can crumble the substrate directly into the bottom of the container, whatever you choose. then he likes to spray the crumbled substrate, which is pretty dry, with water. tap's fine. mushrooms are sturdier than you might think. then, he puts wet verm on top, leveling but not tamping down. then, mushrooms grow out of it. you still need a terrarium, but you can mist the verm directly and you don't need perlite etc. to humidify the air. you just need a cover (saran wrap) to keep bugs and other foreign invaders out. this method has had 100% success. you should fan at least 4 times a day.

I finally made my decision, I'm going to go with pint sized jars and BRF now. I'm going to be at work a lot so I dont know if I can fan 4 times a day. :frown:  Do you know of any inexpensive ways to exchange the air and bring in humidity?  Is that all in the faq?  I'll start digging around for it.  Thanks for all your help guys!

I guess I could spray 4 times a day, it might get old though. I say might because I dont know how long the entire fruiting process takes. How long on average would you say it will take for PF Classic shrooms finish fruiting?

all i used for my casings was verm, and perlite for himidity and a fish aquarium, works great, no misting, nothing, just dont touch it for about 1-2 weeks, fanning 2-5 times daily
