Argentine Time **complete**
    #1161140 - 12/21/02 10:49 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

3/4 qt colonised white millet was spawned to 2 gallons sterilised horse manure. The spawn run was very slow and seemed to be stalled at one point. I misted the running manure with filtered water. The mycelium still appeared to be stalling. I then cased over the 80% colonised horse manure with 1 inch 50/50 + (coir/verm + Oyster shell). I continued to incubate and then noticed a sweet bacterial smell. The casing was then removed from the incubator and placed on the top shelf of my closet for a few days. Once the mycelium started penetrating the casing layer (aprox. %20) the casing was placed in a fruiting chamber. At the time it was placed in the chamber it still had a slight bacterial smell to it. I left for a week and when I came back found a casing w/ near 100% casing layer colonisation and many hyphal knots. The casing no longer smells. The humidity in the fruiting chamber fluctuates between %85 and %95 and is provided via an ultrasonic humidifier.

Excellent start Joshua.  I noticed the spawn run to be slow on argentines as well.  I found its better to use a little more spawn with these then you would for other P. Cubensis.  I bet you get atleast 7 flushes.  I will defently be watching your log.

Best of luck to you!

Happy Holidays Everyone

In reply to:

sterilised horse manure

Really, I thought sterillized poo would contaminate too easily?

I am using a Sony DSC-p30. The camera is no longer being sold. The DSC-p51or -p31 are equavalent models with even higher Mp ratings. Check this link out for reviews of digital cameras.

Maybe so, but I prefer sterilisation to pastuerisation because I have experienced the opposite.

That's quite interesting. How do you go about sterilizing poo?

I place the poo in a pillow case and then into my PC. I PC for two hours at 15 lbs. I prehydrate the dung and allow the steam to complete the hydration by the end of the PC cycle. It took a couple of tries to get the moisture right.

The difference I experienced between the two methods may be due to my asceptic technique and not directly to the methods.

I decided to apply a partial casing layer (1/4 inch deep). Here are a couple of pics.

Close-up before additional casing added.

After casing added.

Nice! Joshua, you are 'da man! Glad to hear you use ultrasonic humidifiers, too. I have mine on a cheap 30 min on/30 min off timer and it works great. Good camera review link...I like how he suggests getting a Mac. I have a Canon Powershot S20 that I love to this day. 3.3 megapixels and simple to use! Get one on eBay for around $300, but my next digicam will have a Foveon X3 image sensor. Check it out... foveon.com
The Sigma SD9 is available now for $1800, but they say there will be a ~$500 model out by next Christmas.

These are from tonight. The first pic is fogged due to consensation on my lens. It appears that the side that was not recased is developing more fruits than the recased side. Stay tuned for further developments.

I forgot to turn my heater on so they have been chilling at 60-65 F for the last 30 hrs. I try to keep them at 76F usually, I may bump that up to 80 F if I get ambitious.

argents are great - meaty but solid and they stain blue/black with orange caps that have strange upturned margins
