Finer verm = greater water retention but slower colonization.

Powdered verm? I have never heard of or seen that but am betting that it can't be used easily.

one of the important reason for vermiculite is to airate the mixture. when finer verm is used, itll settle in closer together, thus restricting airation.

think of it like this (this example is extreme, but shows the point)

if you had three large rocks in one jar, and sand in another. then you pour water in the jars. the water in the one with rocks will dribble down to the bottom quick. the water in the jar with sand will slowly seep down.

there, you see the bigger the verm, the more airation. and especially in an enclosed container(sealed jar), airation is vital

I ONLY use fine verm. It's excellent when you get into the fruiting stage due to how much water it can hold. I have also not noticed any differences in colonization speed due to the coarseness. Go for it........connect four.
