eeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwww
    #1160714 - 12/21/02 06:16 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

i just pc'd 6 1/2 pint jars. i put 2 washcloths in the bottom of the thing, and after 1 hour, i took it off the heat. i waited 5 hours and then took the top off. it smelled like oatmeal, and there was a "gooo" in the bottom of the pc. it was really like picking up a hankerchief with wet oatmeal in it (like when you take an oatmeal bath when you have poison ivy). there was only alittle water left in the pot. is this "gooo" from vermiculite being "cooked" or the brf? i don't know what the hell it is.

i'm pc'ing the pot with just water in it to get rid of the shit left inside.

anyone else had this problem?

This is gonna sound dumb, but did you have jars on your lids? Oh, how much water did you put in your PC?

well, i didn't really understand your post, but i assume you meant "lids on my jars" i put foil on the jars (according to annos pf tek for simple minds) then i put on the ring (just the ring, not the metal lid) then i put another piece of foil on top of that.

i left the jar lids (the rings) a little loose for air pressure to escape.

You should have put the rings on. I had a similar problem with my first batch of BRF, but I ended up with jars full of goo. Now I put lids and rings on, tape over the holes and have had some good results.

Hrm, tape over inoculation holes is sufficient? I've been buying new lids for nothing?

Probably.

yeah, and next time, put the lids on.  Put the substrate up to 1/2 inch of the lid, then put the layer of dry verm, then the lid, then the ring, then the foil.  Better luck next time

i opened two jars and noticed that there were small areas of the dry verm layer that were wet. does this mean that i am doomed? i don't really mind starting over, cause i haven't innoculated yet. but if i don't have to, then i won't.

i figured that the rings would be good, cause in pf tek for simple minds, all that is put on is one layer of foil, then one on top of that. the rings (i thought) should keep the steam out.

the dry top layer of verm is still mostly dry, so that leads me to believe that the substrate has not turned to goo. is that a safe assumption?

shit!!!!

You opened them, you're doomed no matter what.

i just thought that the foil would be easier to innoculate through. perhaps not.
i just don't feel comfy using the lids, i don't know why.
well, i'll start over.

should i put the lids on with the rubber seal touching the glass, or the metal lid?

I'd suggest just doing it with the rings and lids next time, close them as tight as you can, they're self sealing. And of course, DON'T OPEN THEM!

http://www.shroomwizard.com/enter.html is a nice newbie tek. I'd go with that. Unless of course you want to cake.

Some people got issues, j/k.  Just take the lids, punch four holes in it, (I do it with a small nail) then do the process mentioned above.

I've done it both ways, both worked.  I think I read some people like to put it with the rubber seal up because the rubber melts to the lid, but I haven't experience that, and until I do, I'll put the seal any damn way I please.

I love the shroomwizard's grow guide because of its simplicity, but I really don't like using potting soil as a casing layer. Oh and you could follow this tek and instead of casing, just fruit off the cakes.

What do you have against soil? Easy to sterilize, I've never gotten a contam with it either. Though I do use cow dung for my top casing layer, so I don't use that tek word for word.

How do you prepare your dung for casing? The one time I tried it (my second attempt at growing) I got some huge fruits and then a sick case of green.

I just didn't like the results I got off of potting soil. It seemed a little too dense, and hard to maintain correct moisture content.
