God
    #1160541 - 12/21/02 04:57 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I chose this day to say a little bit about my relationship to God.  I consider that part of my life to be very private and do not share it with close friends let alone my pals on the Internet.  Nevertheless I feel compelled to share something about it because it is so important to me.

I view my relationship to God as if I were running  as hard as I could towards some indefinable but totally wonderful goal or thing.  I strive with everything that I have to reach it, to get closer to it.  I can see myself running until my side begins to ache, running with tears streaming down my face as I hurl the very depth of my being into the One.  I falter, I fall, I crash into the ground torn to ruin.  Then I pick myself up and start running again.  I use everything gift that I have, every portion of my being to stretch out to touch, to feel, to embrace, the One.

There is a song that describes this by Todd Rundgren (who else?).  It's called, oddly enough, , "I can't stop running"

And it goes like this:  (check it out)

Time marches on
I learn to crawl, I learn to walk
You couldn't stop me from running
Stop me from running
Before I heard my name
Before I learned to talk
I knew I was running to something
Running to something
Into the arms of my god

Time marches on
And I awaken to the world
And I'm still running to something
Running to something far away
Unseen by the others in the herd
I'm only running to something
Running to something
Into the arms of my dream

I can't stop running
I can't stop running
I have a vision of myself breaking the finish line string
I still can hear it
This dream is calling
So I'll keep running

Time marches on
I start to trip, I start to fall
And now I'm running from something
Running from something on my tail
Can't turn to look, can't hear the call
I'm only running from something
Running from something
Running in fear I will fail

Meanwhile
Time marches on and on
And the strength to run may soon be gone
Now I watch the young ones coming
And it's on their legs I'm running
Into the arms of my god

Can you hear it? Can you hear it?
Feet don't fail me now

I look at it this way.  I'll stop running when I'm out of breath.

Beautiful Mr. Mushrooms. I'm glad you shared with us, especially if it was hard for you to do it.

It all sounds quite inspiring, but without even having a glimpse of the goal or a known method of getting closer; it just might make as much sense as walking around the earth in an effort to get closer to the sun or jumping and trying to touch the moon.

If one cannot seen any results from intense efforts, then where is the motivation to continue?

Why are you here Swami? I don't understand why someone like you would be posting on a board such as this one.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

What exactly is someone like me? What does my motivation have to do with my content? Do you explain everyone of your posts before you comment?

Why do those who think that they are more spiritual than me frequently resort to anger and name-calling (yourself included)? Please answer that.

Woah woah woah.

Let's not have any of that.  Swami meant no harm.  Please do not mistake his style for insensitivity.

And as members of this forum you and Murex know better than to attack a fellow member.  Take it easy guys.

I appreciate your alarm but do not let it cause you to act out your concern in a harsh way.

We are a family, aren't we?

Calm down, please.

Thanks

Well it is philosophy and science too. I'm not sure if Swami fits into one more than the other, but there he is. I agree absolutely that without any notion of results it's a bit foolish to continue on, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's useless or anything. I would venture, though, that Mr. Mushrooms has found much motivation throughout his journey, for example from the song he posted.

Motivation often comes from others, I've found, when the goal is paradoxically a selfish or internal one, such as the goal of Union. Well happy solstice everyone, I've got some DXM to take while it's still today!

You don't seem to have any motivation or desire to see the truth if all you do is say 'it's false' without saying 'What if....?'. My post above should'nt be read with a harsh tone. I really want to know why you are here. You seem to be a mystery to me from what you say.

Another question for you Swami- What do you believe IS true?

I would venture, though, that Mr. Mushrooms has found much motivation throughout his journey...

Of that I have no doubt. And my post was not an attack, real or implied of his sincerity.

But for those of us who cannot see a goal nor our efforts giving any return, it is impossible to stay focused without having something to focus on, nor any positive feedback. This plain jane statement holds true in ANY endeavor; physical, artistic relationships, metaphysical, etc.

I appologize for attacking you personally Swami. However if you would read Mr. Mushrooms post carefully, perhaps you would see how your comment seems insensitive and out of context.

An apology with a "however" added is not a real apology, but I accept it anyways.

In reply to:

Don't you in some way or on some level, know your goal even though words might be inadequate?

--------------------
To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Metaphorically speaking yes, I do know my goal. But that brings up the point of knowledge qua knowledge, doesn't it? I wish the matter were that simple.
