casing depth
    #1160434 - 12/21/02 04:10 PM (14 years, 30 days ago)

i was reading something somewhere and this guy was getting deformed fruits. he gave his specs of his grow, and a more experienced grower said his casing was too shallow.

what is the minimum casing depth that will allow normal fruits? i wont have much vertical room, so this info would be greatly appreciated

The casing layer should be about 1/4 the depth of the substrate, but I have found that it really isn't that critical.

It goes something like this...

The thicker the casing layer, the longer the time it takes to colonize BUT it retains water better (which promotes larger fruits if not overly wet), promotes better second flushes, and provides a better microclimate for the formation of pins, so it is often recommended that casing layers be 1" and sometimes up to 2" in depth for most of the shrooms we talk about around here.
