in my opinion, land is far more important than metal....gold may hold its value, at least as logn as people still want it....but land is almost a necessity, and thus people will forever want far more than gold....and you can actually *use* it and maybe even make money off it without affecting its value (intentionally), unlike many other investments like metals.
and in the USA 80k can out right buy something not too bad right now! one mans, or should say many men's, misfortune is another mans goldmine. if i were a US citizen i would be trying to buy up as much land/houses in certain areas that i could without borrowing money.

If you're the average Shroomery stoner, lay off the weed for a month and you can own a gold Sovereign:

Or how about a nice 10oz bar of silver?

Its a commodity, you buy it.
The local coin store, online bullion dealers, ebay. Know the price of the day and don't get screwed over.

If you're going to buy gold, wait for a dip. it's hard to predict where that will be, but
rule 1. buy low rule 2. sell high
silver looks like a better deal to me than gold right now. i sold my gold to buy silver.
and remember due diligence! do your own research or you'll get burned! it's important to know WHY you're buying what you are.

Gold has no inherent usefulness, currency is going to inflate rapidly, CD's don't beat inflation, and money market accounts are no longer FDIC insured.
I would stick to real assets like land that won't depreciate. It might be a good idea to get into some kind of holding company style work. Like those companies that pay old people pennies on the dollar for their old jewelry. There are a lot of ways to get more money once you have it. How creative are you?

Consider going out of business fire sales and foreclosure/tax auctions for finding great deals at below market value. Then resell them at market value or at a slight discount to encourage a quick sale. High turnover is what you want here.

I agree with this guy 100%!!!! Of course these are all of our own opinions, but if you want to minimize risk, invest in large cap dividend payers - and make sure you set up your DRIP - because with dividends getting revested, you'll have a lot more than 80k after a couple years. BAC, PFE, COF, CAG, MSFT, HD, KFT, MCD, WMT, none of these companies are going anywhere and are easily a part of America. Walmart is a part of everyday life now. Do you think walmart will go out of business tomorrow. I highly doubt it. Walmarts dividend yield is currently 2% (12/07/09)
Also check out T and VZ.
T's dividend yield is currently 5.81% and VZ is 5.68%. Then when it starts compounding, you'll really be loving it more when you come home.
Whatever you decide to do, best of luck. PFE, you can easily double your investment on top of dividends....
Good luck!!!!!
