Any martial artists - advice?

I am considering taking a martial art to increase my agility/balance and physical conditioning and hope it has a mental spinoff (self confidence and discipline.)
I dont know much about the differing aspects of most martial arts ... kicking, punching, sparring/take downs all seem interesting.
I do not know how long i will be able to stay with the school i choose right now, but can probably commit 5 months before moving.
Currently in my town, i am considering:
White crane gung fu - which appeals to me because it seems like it is more of an all around lifestyle type system which includes training with: edged / blunt weapons self defence, nutrition, pressure point therapy, and massage / herbal treatment.
It is a small school that comes highly recommended and seems quite traditional.
Shokaido Karate - This seems like a good school, i like how the present themselves but it seems really family oriented (not sure if this is a bad thing?) - 1 month free, no obligation though!
There are also schools for Judo, Taekwando, wing chun, shotogan, and Aikido
Alot of the schools seem really family oriented, or very... non traditional.
Any opinion about which style, or what to look for in a school?

as far as a style to simply jump into for a few months and get a good physical kick out of it... try judo or tae kwon do, they both are a very mentally and physically trying sport that start breaking down your body and your mind (your bad habits of action and reaction etc.) from pretty much the first moment you walk in. I have found tae kwon do to be much more physically trying, but i think it was because it was a sport that i stuck with a little longer than most, i only dabbled in grappling(judo, wrestling) for about 8 months, and i have been doing tae kwon do and kick boxing since the 7th grade.
don't be drawn to a school that is more flash than flaunt, talk to the trainers, some will allow you a few free sessions to get a feel for the class(i trained with travis lutter for 6 out of the 8 months i did grappling for free, lol) from that point you should be able to make a fairly "informed" decision on what you think will suit your goals. I only started kick boxing because i was a fairly small kid in middle school and found that i was fighting more than most kids around me just to "prove myself", lol, so i started as a "release" and found that i had a knack for the art as well as the "science" of fighting and have stuck with it ever since, i am still fairly small(5' 7" 160-170lbs) but i don't feel the need to "prove" anything anymore... it's enough just to know. lol.
some people however don't start with the same goals, or find that they don't have the particular niche in the sport so they quit, but if you stick with it or just talk to other trainers to suit your ambitions it can become a great way to boost confidence, physical/mental sharpness, fitness etc...

Judo FTW! Grappling is HELLA fun dude, you won't regret it.
I have a black belt in shotogan karate - it's pretty lame TBH.

while it is a very healthy sport, imo (most) karate is for the weekend warriors. lol.
i certainly don't knock the sport or undermine the power of a lot of its athletes, but Karate has become very "diluted" through the years. that is really the case of A LOT of martial arts these days though, I have found that the only credible way to practice many forms is by self study and research.
i have come across many trainers that somehow manage to open up a school, and become "accredited" and everything only to find out that they are simply a student themselves, sometimes only two classes ahead of the class they are teaching. lol.
if you're interested in simple physical well being and self defense technique you might try to find a Krav Maga class... i know you said the listed was your only option, but if you can find a good trainer of Krav Maga it would likely be right up your ally. I have seen people go through only 5 months of Krav Maga and come out with a very HEAVY skill set rivaling my own as far as speed and accuracy.

Yes, i've heard good things about Krav Maga and watched youtube vids.
The karate schools around here are definitely "diluted" as you say. Family oriented and flooded with children - not that that's bad, but not really what i am looking for.
(based off my experience as a kid, and browsing schools on the internet.)
I printed out a couple for 2 free sessions at the White Crane Gung Fu and ill let you know it goes, Tuesday and Thursday.

I agree - virtually all the martial arts have certainly become 'diluted' as you say. I feel like karate is probably the most mainstream, however, and thus the most affected by this.
I practiced karate for 8 years, 4-5 times a week, and out the other side, I have virtually no practical skills. I was even on team Canada for sparring for one year too. I can swing a mean bo, and I do know SOME practical self defense techniques, however I would not react quickly enough with them in the case of an unexpected conflict.

Forget the Karate. Forget the Taekwondo, you won't learn anything practical.
Of the ones you listed, I would go with Wing Chun or Aikido

Wing Chun for practical?
to each there own but i have almost never found ANY practical uses in any kung fu, unless you become a dedicated master with several hours a week to practice, i think that kung fu is far outside the practical purposes of his goals.
but, to each his own.
but aikido, is a different story, there are many practical self defense skills that can potentially be of good use in every day situations.

that goes back to my original point of the lack of true practicality in training in order to "defend your honor". those days are long gone, replaced by the ways of those who don't feel like fighting a fight that can simply be ended with a single motion.
on the streets these days, if you are going to start a fight, you certainly better end it just as quick or else you stand the chance of losing your life.
granted, i have actually managed to save the life of myself and my girlfriend using the skills that i have attained through years of practice and meditation, when a gun was introduced to the situation. however, this is by no means why i train(i was pretty much lucky in that situation, because if you pull a gun you better use it before anyone has a chance to react), i train because i enjoy the sport and the discipline that comes with it, i view it the same way as football or baseball, no practical use on the streets but is a disciplined sport all the same.
