I've found a way to stop anxiety attacks!
    #1159894 - 12/21/02 10:30 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I've been suffering from paranoia and anxiety attacks for over a year, and they would even turn smoking weed into hell (i once went to hospital because i thought i was dying from weed).

I told my mum about my anxiety, and she recomended me a natural drug called St John's Wort. I took this twice daily for a week, and already noticed some change. Before this, I was having at least 10 anxiety/panic attacks a day. After about two weeks of taking St John's Wort, my anxiety has completely dissapeared.

I strongly recomend taking St John's Wort to anyone having trouble with panic while tripping

My friends mom is a nurse, and she said that the hospital she works at all the doctors were saying it could potentially be very bad, having some nasty side effects or something. Be careful..

yea, st johns wort can work wonders... it doesnt work for some people, so they'll just say its placebo... nobody stops to think that mebbe it just doesnt work for THEM. people have different body chemistries. anywho, i'm glad that it worked :-) it's an ssri (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitor) which creates more seratonin for the brain i think. its also supposed to have weak maoi properties (erowid told me so :-)

i hope it keeps workin, heh

I heard St. Johns Wart was a mild, naturally occuring, MAIO... don't know how much truth is behind that though.

A lot of doctors just say that herbal medicines do not work, but I swear by it. It can't just be a placebo because my anxiety was quite severe.

Regards everyone's bio chemistry being different, my THC experiences are always far more intense than my friends, yet I can handle alcohol rather well. That's why some people can trip hard on a gram mushroom, whereas some one else will need 6 grams do get the same effect

There is another thread about this... basically, back a few years ago, they thought it might be an MAOI because it seemed to do the same things that MAOIs do.  The current thought is that it has properties similiar to an MAOI, but is not, technically speaking, an actual MAOI.  Of course nobody can predict what tomorrows reasearch will show..

really man? it works? Because I've been looking for a natural way. I've been suffering from anxiety and attacks for little while now. And we have a bottle of st johns wort in the house.

Someone in this thread mentioned risks? what risks?

But keep using it man. Let me know how it keeps going for you(if you notice any negative side effects or such). THat would be awesome if it worked for me

you can learn to stop anxiety attacks before they start

I've learned how to do this now. I don't have 'all out attacks' anymore. Cause i'm able to stop it from happening. And it seems i'm getting better and better. But I still have 'anxiety'. Mainly when I smoke pot. I get it once in awhile when i'm sober, but not really. Anytime I smoke up though, i get lots of anxiety. No attacks anymore(cause i can stop them)...but still isn't fun.

Damn, that sucks, is that normal among people that suffer from anxiety attacs?  Glad to hear you found a way to control it.

it's an ssri (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitor) which creates more seratonin for the brain i think.

To be more precise it dosen't "create more seratonin", it prevents previously excreted seratonin from being taken back up out of the synapses - hence reuptake inhibitor

Yes, there are risks involved with St. John's wort.
In this posts, the generic name is mentioned first, followed by commerical names in parentheses.
For one, it counteracts the effects of most forms of oral contraception (the Pill).
If you're already on an SSRI, or an MAOI, or tri-cyclic anti-depressants, or the painkiller tramadol (Ultram) or the migraine medication sumatriptan (Imitrex), you should not take St. John's Wort. Doing so can cause serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening.
St. John's Wort also causes one to become sensitive to UV light, and can result in severe sun burns.
If you have problems with high blood pressure, don't ingest St. John's Wort if you hae also had aged cheese, chocolate, or red wine. These foods contain the protein tyramine, which when combined with hypericin, causes attacks of high blood pressure. These attacks are very rare, but still possible.
St. John's wort may also decrease the effectiveness of:
Digoxin (Lanoxicaps or Lanoxin)
Cyclosporine (Neora, Sandimmune)
Protease inhibitors for HIV
Amitriptyline (Elavil)
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theophylline (Aerolate, Elixophyllin, or Slophyllin)
Chemotherapy drugs
Anti-psychotic medications
The following medications can increase risk of sensitivity to UV light:
Sulfa antibiotics
Piroxicam (Feldene)
Omeprazole (Prilosec)
Lansoprazole (Prevacid)
ACE (Angiotensin-converting Enzyme) Inhibitors
St. John's Wort can also intensify the effets of anesthesia, resulting in over-sedation.
By the way, the active constituent of St. John's Wort, hypericin, works most like an MAOI, not an SSRI.
Hope this is helpful!!!!

You should reply to who you are speaking too.

Sorry about that, 3eyedgod. I was replying both to the original question of "there's risks from St. John's Wort?" and to your post about the SSRI effects. Didn't mean to offend anyone. *bows humbly*
