!!!!!! Can a syringe become contaminated? !!!!
    #1159625 - 12/21/02 07:37 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Ok i know this person that inc. 3 1/2 jars with cambodian strain. all cakes grew with no problems, he later inc 3 more 1/2 pint jars with the same cambodian strain and all three were contaminated with cobweb. at the same time this person inc three other jars with hutuala strain with zero contams. so my question is can a syringe be ok, then some how get contaminated. my friend heats the needle tip and wips down with alcohol before incubation.

It could just be insterile conditions for the innoculation that cause mold, yet it could also be the syringe.

ok heres the results, he incubated three 1/2 pint jars at the same time, sterilized and mixed them all at once. one jar was incubated with Hutuala strain, its showing growth, another jar was incubated with b+- its showing growth as well, now the cambodian jar is still not growing, and my friend is noticing water build up again, this happened last time, first water, then COBWEB! So hes trying one more
experiment, he incubated some honey water with the syringe, hes then goin to incubate three more jars to see if they will colonize.... do you think he should or just throw that syringe out?

And the whole thing I don't understand, is the syringe worked fine the first time, made an awesome first flush, and according to my friend is on a second one now from the first cakes!!! The only time the syringe was exposed was when it was in a glove box..... i don't get it.

Did your friend ever sterilize the syringe? ie, put a hot flame over it till it turns red?
