fish tank heater idea/question

my dog has a 150 watt fish tank heater she wants to use for incubating her jars. she is doing this in a small Rubbermaid container, because she doesn't really have the room for the tub in tub method. she came up with the idea to submerge the heater in a metal bread pan that is about a foot long and 7 inches deep and some foil over it so the water does not evaporate. and just put the pan in the middle of my incubation container. the heater seems to get very very hot very very fast. its kinda scary but she thinks it will be alright in a metal container, at least there would be no melting of container. its a large glass heater with a thermostat. does this sound safe to you? any better ideas? she really is limited to this one container right now.

I let my jars colonize at room temperature. They take a little longer but then you don't have to worry about the heater safety. What temperatures are you working with?

Your dog should put the jars above the refrigerator...what your dog has now is a heat bomb. Just above room temp is best, they say.
Your dog is cool, mine just craps a lot and sits around licking his nuts...

Also just for the record, there is a small cheap flexible submersible aquarium heater out there that is intended for small fish bowls and it only raises the water to about 5 degrees above ambient temperature, which is perfect for those concerned about their heater/heat bomb getting too hot and killing their jars or melting their tub.

Does that heater have a thermostat on it? I can't tell from the picture. You can put it in a 1 gallon cider jar to make a heater. But, I would suggest that if that heater is capable of it using it for pasteurizing bulk subs, and using a ceramic heater and shelf to incubate spawn.

the room there in is normally 67 to 72 degrees.
the heater was turned on all night last night to the highest setting of 95 and the temprature in the container was only 70.
all these are good suggestions, i will be experimenting with different containers. the cider jar sounds like a good idea.
and i wish i could use the top of our fridge but these guys have to be discreet.

If you are trying to be discreet, I know a pit bull who colonizes his jars in a cabinet inside of a closet at room temp with great success. A very discreet and worry free set up. The temps range from the lowest 50 to highest 80. I highly recomend this for your situation. Forget about the heater.
