Sometimes I look at my dog and think "Gee, it would be so nice to be a dog. I could just lie around all day and do nothing!" But then I realize that is exactly what I look like when I am watching TV!

Think about it... We just sit there. And stare. It's like sleeping without the sleep! We are just big sacks of bones when we sit and watch TV!

That's why I try not to watch too much of it... We don't have TV at my apartment, and the only time I watch it is when I go home, just because it's there. I think educational TV is good. And sometimes movies... Movies that make you think, I guess. But if it's not educational or a movie that makes me think, I would much rather be reading a book or be on The Shroomery!

Good post!

I haven't had TV since 1988.

Wow, that's amazing!
I gave up TV for Lent a couple years ago... I'm not religious (as you know), but I think it is a good practice to give something up for a while, so I like to join in with that particular holiday.  Anyway... Giving up TV felt great!  I felt useful for a change!

Even now I still watch very little TV.  Last year I did not have TV in my dorm room, and this year (like I already said), we don't have TV in our apartment; so the only time I watch it is during the infrequent visits I make to "home."

I have a question, though...

Are you implying that computers are better?  And if so, how?

Well im pretty sure anything that makes you think is a good thing, whether it be coming out of a tv screen or not.

Like Mr.Mush said once, tv has so much potential for spreading knowledge and inspiration, but its put too such waste. A giant zombifying advertisement. It's funny how hard that is too realize... just shows the nasty power of influence it has over us.

I might watch TV for like an hour in a whole week.
I like the nature shows and old simpsons episodes.

You and Mr. Mushrooms are very correct...

It makes me so angry to see how TV is put to such waste when it could be such a useful tool for the betterment of the world.  Not a lot of things make me angry either!  Just cops... And the government.

And it makes me scared to see the power that it has over us!  I think instead of putting it to the uses they should have, the government chose to use TV to pacify us and make us lazy.

Heck, with all the things they can show on TV these days, this must be a free country!!!

That last post wasn't a reply to your question.

I think computers can be just as bad as television. Or far worse. Want to talk about addiction look at some of those Mass-Online-Rpg players. There is no better definition of addiction. I used to be one of em too.

There is just as much mind numbing trash on the internet as there is the tv. But on computers you can learn to control it. You can pursue any form of knowledge and communication you wish, and I think many people put computers to good efficient uses, to learn and to get things done.

But what the hell does TV really do for us?

I think all I ever use the internet for anymore is the Shroomery. That's all I need from it.

Is it alright to be addicted to knowledge? I dunno, it's workin for me.

The problem with the tv is it has been overun by corporations and most of it is crap, especially the commercials which waste most of the time. With the computer I have a lot more freedom and good content to read. The computer is never a waste of time for me. I can see how it would be for those people with AOL, net nanny type programs and whatnot though.

Heh, I haven't had a TV since 1988 either, when I moved here to the Dominican Republic, but whenever I am on vacation in Canada, I watch it. As a matter of fact, I watch a lot more of it than I used to when I owned one, because I am trying to catch up on a year's worth of Simpson's and King of the Hill reruns in a few weeks. But what the heck... I am on vacation. I rent movies then, too.

The really funny thing is that I will go to the trouble of setting up the VCR to record reruns in the middle of the night, then watch them first thing in the morning, zipping past the commercials. This behavior would seem to indicate that I am really hooked -- but the instant I step on the plane to come back, I forget all about TV. I don't miss it one little bit and never think about it at all till the next time I'm in Canada.

As for the "brainwashing" with commercials theory... I don't believe that is a universal phenomenon. I can't think of a single thing I buy that is advertised on TV except Taco Bell, and I eat at Taco Bell maybe once a year. Besides, I ate at Taco Bell long before I ever saw a commercial for it. Oh... and I own a Mac computer, but I have had a Mac since before THEY were advertised on TV, too.

Yes, instead of spending time in front of a TV CRT, spend your time in front of a monitor CRT. It is so much more "natural". Why watch the Simpsons when you can be downloading porn?

I realy get a kick out of the attitude that because someone watches tlc or discovery, they're learning something and thus watching tv is ok. Not trying to down on anyone or anything, but I've seen people just as zombified by "educational programing" as anything else on tv. Blank stare, every word going in one ear and out the other, and watching the exact same show every other day for a week. Wouldn't it (just as pretty much any addictive behavior)) be better summed up as how you do it, not what you do that makes it right or wrong? Just personal prefrence, but I do most of my learning from print, I retain more that way. I turn to television for entertainment, I love my weekly fix of south park, and generaly fall asleep watching a movie.

There is nothing wrong with watching television. Watching too much TV is a waste of time, and watching without being critical is dangerous, but the same goes for books as well.

A lot of people go around bragging about how they don't watch TV, I think for a lot of them, they think it makes them intellectually superior to those who do watch TV, which is complete bullshit. If you watch TV in moderation, and aren't retarded, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. Come to think about it, why do these people who don't watch TV hate it so much? How can they possibly have a valid opinion on television programming if they don't watch it every now and then?

Way back when literacy first started to become widespread, books were often considered evil, then when radio came out, the same thing happened, then television, now the internet is a haven for child molesters and pornographers.

TV is fine. You can either watch it or not, but if you don't watch it, you have no right to criticize it. There is good programming on television. There is programming that has real artistic, journalistic, or educational merit. There is also garbage. Anyone with half a brain should have no trouble picking out the good stuff, and there is even lots to learn from the crap.

(blanket reply)

I agree with the fact that T.V. watched in moderation and with a critical mind is O.K. for the individual.  The problem is a lot of people either watch too much T.V., or don't watch with a critical mind, or both.  It's the effect the T.V. has on the society or culture on the whole that makes it so bad.  It makes people lazy and it makes people (when I say people I mean on the whole) not think, not ask questions (at least the important ones).  Read on to find out more.

The T.V. is run by corporations.  It's all one big mind fuck - sensory overload.  It's sole purpose is to cause mass consumption of products on a global scale.  It overemphasizes consumerism.  Ever wonder why there's so much "garbage" on T.V. Senseless violence, sexual situations, etc...  It's because these things are easily recognized in the same way by cultures around the world.  You don't need to explain it, or worry about "translation", it appeals to people across the planet on the same level.  The only reasons there are shows on T.V. at all is too advertise (on the show as well as commercial time).

On the national level it is easily used by politicians as well as corporations, to reach their goals.  This is because people aren't critical of what they see on T.V. they just accept what the T.V. says as "the way it is"(they don't ask why, more on this later)  People don't care about issues politically, that's "boring".  They just care which politician looks (makes them feel) the best.

As for the "brainwashing" T.V. does have this effect on people.  Commercials no longer try to explain the real benefits of their products.  Their just pretty shows put on to appeal to the subconscious feeling part of the mind, rather than the rational thinking part of the mine. (don't beleive me, analyze some commercials - tape them and watch them a couple times - use the pause button or slow motion)  Why? (note:if you analyze most T.V. shows and movies don't bother with the question why, they don't want people to ask that question, they want them to think because "that's just the way it is" for commercial reasons - advertising more effective). They appeal to that part of the mind because they have to with the vast number of competitors for people's attention out there.  They want you to "feel" better about their product than another product so you will buy theirs.  They want you to buy their product without thinking about it (if you thought about it you'd by the more effective product or, as the case may be cheaper product).

I went off on kind of a rant there

I took a Media Analysis class
I'd suggest the class to anyone.

Any questions?

I have one - Does anyone think I use parenthesis too much?

Highwayman, Do you talk much when you are in complete awe of something?

Honestly, some of the things on those nature shows are downright amazing. Almost everytime I watch one there is some really fucked up bizarre thing that I had no idea existed. Either that or it's just a plain beautiful sight.

I think there is a big difference between this and being 'pacified' by a sitcom or a soap opera or something. Just my opinion though...

Now I need to laugh at something. Ha, ha, ha, He made a joke about his penis!

Hrmmm.. commercials... Hey, a hot chick stared at that guy wearing the Nike's...
