My First Grow Log - Cubensis Cambodian & F+
    #11589616 - 12/05/09 01:52 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

This is my first attempt at mushroom cultivation; the inspiration for doing so coming from the thrill of mushroom hunting for the first time this fall, and the Shroomery itself.

I decided to use the PF Tek after having read so much about it, amongst other methods as well.  I am going to try other teks in the future, but this seemed to be the most common and easiest method for beginners.

Substrate Preparation for 1/2 pint jars
12 1/2 pint mason jars are prepared with a batch of substrate consisting of 7 cups of vermiculite, 2 cups of organic brown rice flour, and as much water as the verm and rice flour could absorb without dripping profusely.  The jars are boiled in 1 inch of water in a covered pot for 90 minutes.  I have to add about a cup of water to the pot twice due to evaporation.

Incubation Method
I originally built an incubator with 2 plastic tubs and an aquarium heater.  The temp. ranged between 73F and 75F and would never get any warmer, so I decided to place them at the top of my laundry room on some cabinets where the temp. range is 78F to 83F.

11/26/09 - 9am - Inoculation A - D+0
6 jars are inoculated with Cubensis Cambodian, 6 jars are inoculated with Cubensis F+.

12/02/09 - 9am Inoculation B - D+0
2 jars are inoculated with Cubensis Cambodian, 3 jars are inoculated with Cubensis F+.

12/04/09 - 8pm Inoculation A - D+8
Inoculation group A Cambodian are growing well 8 days in.  All the Cambodian jars from Inoculation A appear to be around 20-25% colonized.  It is going to be more difficult to observe the colonization rate and possibly the completion of colonization once the mycelium has grown to cover the bottom of the jars, because there will be no way to look inside.

12/05/09 - 10am Inoculation A - D+9
Inoculation group A F+ are barely growing at all.  It appears as if some germination has taken place upon close inspection, but growth thereafter has simply not occurred.  It should be noted that the supplier of the spore syringes, a Shroomery advertiser, sent the F+ as a "free" gift, while I paid for the Cambodian.  Shoddy practice possibly, I am going to try Sporeworks next time.

Update: The vendor was really nice upon hearing my situation and is sending out another syringe since the F+ have done nothing.

12/19/09 - 10:00am Inoculation A - D+23
Inoculation Group A are birthed after dunking for 12 hours and rolling in vermiculite.

12/21/09 - 4:20pm Inoculation A - D+25
I see my first pin!  Swept over by soaring jubilation

12/26/09 - 9am Inoculation A - D+30
I harvested 3 shrooms whose veils had broken.  The feeling is surreal joy.  They tasted great, like the physical manifestation of TLC bathing my tongue.  Thanks for all the help guys!

take the foil off of your colonizing jars. You don't need to cover up the inoculation holes so long as you have that dry layer of verm. Covering the holes actually slows down colonization.

Foil or no foil it's all the same. I've tested two. One with and one without foil. Made no difference.

Your jars are looking good btw. Happy cultivating.

I always kept foil on with this TEk and worked just fine.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I have read that it is both beneficial and harmful to leave the foil on during the colonizing period.  I decided to leave the foil loose, and there is no tape over the holes, so I think I have met the best of both worlds.

I will update the post in a few days when colonization is complete.

Once the mycelium has grown to surround the bottom and sides of the jar, how do you know when the hidden inside is fully colonized?

--Thanks in advance.

When the outside is fully colonized, wait one more week. Thats all.

leave them for a full week after they appear to be fully colonized. it really helps toward getting a nice pinset

Great, thanks.  Just to be sure: Is this one week the same as the week that is used to let it get a "full grip" on it's substrate?  Or do I need to wait a further week after this week you describe?

The easiest one to see is on the rightmost image, directly in the middle of the frame.  It is pretty tiny but quite distinct once you see it.

Happy holiday season to all.  I woke up today to veils broken on a few shrooms.  I have a quick question regarding my first grow and the time to harvest.  In the pics below you will see 3 shrooms with the veils just broken, and a number of other shrooms that range from knots, to pins, to small shrooms with veil still on.

I have read that one should harvest all the shrooms at once and remove all the aborts and such.  Given the picture below, should I do just that, or should I just harvest the ones with the veils dropped and wait on the others?

I'm excited and nervous, don't wanna fuck up.  Thanks for the advice in advance

"pic n' choose" is fine for your cakes. they will tolorate the disruption. just "twist" and they will pop right off. the rest of the pins and mushies will grow out in 5-6 days. by then the cake will want a rest for a couple days (depending on the RH in your house) then a dunk and they will be ready to go again. looks like in a week you'll have a nice handfull for 2! nice work

I ate my first 3 self grown cubensis about 20 minutes ago   Thanks for all the help guys.

I got 4 more strains of cubensis from sporeworks for Christmas and a Cyanescens print from a nice guy in the trading forums.  I plan on trying the grain and bulk methods with these so I will surely post questions for you smart cats to answer.

Happy Holidays Peace!
