Question about AD&D rules (Baldur's Gate) **FOUND ANSWER FOR THOSE INTERESTED**

I restarted a game and I'm reading a FAQ that's telling me I want to try to roll for these stats:
STR: 18/51 -- affects melee ability to hit and damage DEX: 11* -- affects armor class, and ranged hit & damage CON: 18** -- affects HP INT: 10 -- used for spells and lore (mage) WIS: 10 -- used for spells and lore (cleric, druid) CHA: 18 -- affects quest rewards and store prices
What's the number after the slash mean on STR? Most times I roll it gives me a whole number, what's the deal with the fraction?

Something to do with there being diminishing returns after you get STR over 18. I kind of forget cuz I haven't played in so long but it is something like that.

You play Baldur's Gate, you're awesome (pure logic). About STR 18/51, I think the higher the second number, the higher the strenght. I think it goes like 18/25, 18/50, etc, 18/00 and 19. But think wisely when choosing your stats, if you remeber the artifacts you can find in game (like in BGII you find quite early a ring that sets charisma to 18...).

I scoured the BioWare forums for an answer and finally found one, to those who are interested:
Quote:
Warrior classes (Fighters, Rangers and Paladins: Barbarians too with Tutu/BGT.) with an 18 strength get something called a "strength percentile": in effect, this gives them a strength better than a regular 18 but not as good as a 19.
Other classes can only get an unmodified 18. It's misleading to say that 18/01 is the lowest in the 18-category, since 18/01 is already better than an unmodified 18 without a percentile.
The percentile is a number from 1-100, though a 100 is written '00'. (This is because in PnP AD&D you determine this number by rolling two ten-sided dice with sides labelled 0-9, one for the tens digit and one for the ones digit, and two zeros is considered 100.)
The higher this number, the better your strength, and the better the combat bonuses you get:
Unmodified 18: +1 to hit, +2 to damage 18/01-18/50: +1 to hit, +3 to damage 18/51-18/75: +2 to hit, +3 to damage 18/76-18/90: +2 to hit, +4 to damage 18/91-18/99: +2 to hit, +5 to damage 18/00: +3 to hit, +6 to damage (A 19 gives +3/+7.)
Related things like your carrying capacity and chance to bash locks is similarly improved with a higher number. There's a chart in the back of the manual that gives the details.
So you can see, 18/00 is much much better than an unmodified 18. However, I think it's impractical to suggest that you ought to "hold out" for getting 18/00 at character creation rather than any high percentile. The odds of 18/00 are only 1:100 even if you do get (or raise your strength to) an 18. If you want a high overall roll and strong other stats as well, and don't want to reroll for days, you may need to settle for less.
So in short, it's a special stat open to fighters that's not quite 19 but better than 18.

I plan to pick them up after I play through BGI and II and expansions. I hope PST has mods that let you play in higher res like BG does.

planescape has an amazing story and set of characters but for me combat somehow never seemed as good BG2.

i usually work on hp and dex and moderate str on my fighter warriors and paladins, really they are only good to hold the enemies back while your spellcasters, bard, rogue, or ranger kicks their ass.

Not sure about that. You're quite happy to have powerful warriors to kill smaller monsters and magic-resistant ennemies. Bards are quite weak in BG too...
