does that mean you just birthed them last night as well? it might be soon enough to pull them out and dunk now

Its perfectly fine to take a cake out of the FC to dunk really at any time as long as there is no big mushrooms growing on it already. You can dunk with pins on the cake and they will survive the dunk and grow bigger. Always always always dunk after birthing and between flushes its very important to replenish the lost moisture while they were colonizing and fruiting.

I know this is sort of an old thread, but what if you want to crumble and case your cakes? would it still be advisable to dunk them before hand?

i could not advise even crumbling a cake just to case it. It is a waste and they will fruit far better as a cake

Why don't you recommend crumbling a cake? I'm just curious because I've seen it done on here with really good results.

First off cubes dont need a casing. Secondly when you crumble a cake it now has to rebuild its self taking energy away from fruting. Also cakes have maximum surface area for fruting.
Now you can crumble a cake to spawn to bulk that works alright, but to case it would be a waste and opens up a chance for contams

Wouldn't you get the greatest surface area for fruiting by crumbling them and laying them out though?... yeah I've read about how cubes don't necessarily NEED a casing if they can maintain proper moisture but I usually don't have the time to mist them as much as they would require so I use a casing.

If you measure the surface area of a single cake you will see what I mean by it has the greatest fruiting surface area. Also you dont have to baby cakes heck I got this from, just fruiting it in a pop bottle maybe misting it twice a day

Haha that's cute I dunno, I've never used cakes so I've gotta lot to learn. You don't dunk and roll?

No prob. For the dry verm layer I find it best to run the verm though a coffee grinder a few quick times to make it alittle finer always works well

Sorry to bring this up again, but why don't you do subsequent rolls? In my experience, the mycelium colonizes the first roll and as such, I end up rolling it again for second and every other flush. Is this detrimental, or do you just think it's unnecessary?
