First time doing coir.... ?
    #11584198 - 12/04/09 04:22 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

So I got a big block of coir and am ready to get some ready for a few trays I got. I'm going to be doing 2 trays that are about 5"x12". Just wondering how big does coir expand so I can get an idea of how much coir to break off. Also do you still do the pasteurization if doing strait coir or coir/verm? Just want to know if pasteurization for coir is necessary. thanks!

Pasteurize via the link posted above, don't sterilize. It's very likely the packaging of the coir will tell you how much it will expand and possibly how much water to add.

I just did two trays about that size, first time using. I wattered down the whole brick to see what it expanded too so I know for myself. I had at least half of the brick left. That stuff expands like crazy...But thats my opinion

its an extra step but you want as lil contam as possible. and that sure helps

As I posted in another thread where you gave this horrible advice, you do not sterilize bulk subs, you pasteurize them.  Sterilizing bulk subs actually increases the chances of contamination. since your completely sterile sub will be exposed to open, dirty air.

Here's what I posted earlier:

I was new to coir this year and now I wouldn't use anything else.  Its easy and works incredibly well, especially if you add a few goodies.

Though the link above shows pasteurization via a PC, I basically start at the step where the bucket comes into play.  I throw all my ingredients in a clean painters bucket with boiling water, mix, close, and let it cool for 4-6 hours or so.  I would have to say this is a psuedo pasteurization I guess but its never failed me.  Easy and only a bucket to clean instead of a bucket and a bulky PC to clean.

And how much coir?  Most of the bricks I've seen expand to 8 quarts, more or less.  If you are going with a sub depth of around 3 or 4 inches or so I would say a little more than half a brick should do you.  For sure though, check your packaging to see what it expands to.  Also be sure to include your additive when calculating volume.  I use 1 brick coir, 2 quarts coffee, 3 cups gypsum, 1 quart verm, and a little less than 1.5 gallons water.

To each his own but.... I wouldn't sterilize my sub (per above).

Good Luck with the grow!

Sure thing! I'm kinda getting bumbed out on my mono's. I had all 3 (including the one I put outside today) fail on me. My first one was too wet, next one got trich before first flush, and my last one has been at like 40% colonized and it's been a month. And it got cobweb in the last couple days. Thats kind of why I'm leaning towards coir. I have unlimited amounts of free range cow poop and also some horses have been hanging around the prop so there is enough poo for some tubs there. I just got to get this contam issue delt with. On the other hand I have some EQ's looking to be some of my biggest shrooms ever, Grown in a tray with about 3.5" sub cow poop/verm. I'll post some porn in my other thread!

Go to my journal and go to my favorite links then go to coir section and look at the large doses revised coir tek..  I pretty much follow that to a T

The only thing I changed was my recipe..  1 brick 2q verm 5q water.
