Cobweb?
    #1157665 - 12/20/02 11:04 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I've read the FAQ and frankly still can't figure out if one of my cakes has cobweb mold. The thing that seemed to tip me off to this possibility was the fact that it had seemed to sneak over the casing material (double-ended casing tek pf-style) on the top and sorta reach out at the base. It does not look anything like the first two pics of cobweb in the contam FAQ. It is thin like a cobweb, but still looks pretty white.

I'll try to get a picture up later tonight if I can for your opinion.

Would dunking the cake right now possibly kill off the cobweb? I've heard you can lightly mist the cake with h2o2+h2o, what ratio should I use?

Thanks in advance

The 'perts say spray it with non-diluted peroxide (3% H2o2) as opposed to the 1-10 ratio or whatever you might use for cleaning and such (too weak in this case, won't help...). The mycelium will not be damaged if you only spray it on a bit, and if the alleged cobweb mold is there, it will dissolve away.

It's probably not an issue anymore... this thread is five years old.

Cobweb mold continues to be an issue actually, you looked it up, didn't you? Anyway, the fuzzy intruder will disappear when sprayed (you don't need to drown your cakes, just a quickie). I did it for safety/reassurance yesterday and caught some, it dissolves away and only the mycelium can then been seen.

This thread has been closed.

Reason:
There's plenty of recent posts on cobweb without bringing back a five year old one.
