Voila! Pins!
    #1155692 - 12/19/02 03:52 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

After about 12 days in the fruiting chamber, cake #5 is (get ready for this) PINNING!  I'm very excited right now as this is the first time I've ever gotten to such a stage in mushroom cultivation.  Can you believe that....I've never seen growing pins in actual everyday life....

Cake 5:

I'm guessing that these primordia (if they become mature fruitbodies) may get water-logged (fat-asses) due to that fact that the cake is directly on the perlite.  Then again, I had decided about 3 days ago to move the cakes off of their tin-foil place-mats because I thought they looked a bit dehydrated.  Opinions?

Can't forget a family picture (Cake 5 circled):

One step at a time.  Suggestions are more than welcome.

Good job, see, I told you that you'd be getting pins sooner or later.  Keep it up.

Looking good, in time, more will come. Ah yes, the joys of pinning, and knowing what they can turn into

As for the water logged shroom, I have no idea. I've seen cakes that had one huge shroom on it, nearly tipping the cake over.

So......tin-foil, or no tin-foil? I'm afraid that if I put them back on the foil they may become dehydrated?

Good job man, I still get happy when I start to get pins. I remember when I saw my very first pin on the side of this casing I was doing, I wouldnt stop checking it every hour or 2, its a great feeling of accomplishment! Give us a picture of the guy when hes all grown up:)

Update, questions.... [Re: Northernsoul]
    #1157769 - 12/20/02 09:54 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Well.....it seems that a ton of new primordia have begun growing. I've noticed growth on just about every cake now. My main worry is the fact that every pin is either growing on what used to be the verm barrier or from underneath each cake. New picture:

Suggestions? Am I fine?

BTW, Slighter, these are EQ's.

It sounds odd, but would it be okay to flip cakes over? They seem to be growing from the bottom of that cake, so why not set the other side on the perlite? Just a thought, I really know nothing about cakes.

I'm new at this as well but it looks like you cakes are upside down. I thought the cakes should be set upright after birthing? They spent the time colonizing in a certain position, I would have to assume the even shrooms would be affected by gravity during incubation as they are during other stages of growth.

That's actually an interesting point. I've only read one Tek so far (Simple Cubensis Growing Tek) that has said to make sure the cakes are in the same position as they were during incubation. But, I've read a million teks and have seen a million pictures of cakes placed in this psuedo-upside down position. Anyone here on the forums make sure their cakes are in the same position as in incubation?

BTW, another picture update:

I think Cake #5 likes me.

my cakes were birthing shrooms from the downside too! i fliped them. but i think even if i didnt flip them there wouldnt be a problem.
i suggest you to just leave them alone and let these babies grow:-)
