Please don't tell me that they're all phucked.HELP
    #1155139 - 12/19/02 01:38 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

My friend has a few fully colonised trays of poo that were spawned from crumbled Arcadan Coast PF cakes. The poo colonized fine, and relativly quickly. After they were fully colonized, he cased with 50/50+... A day or two later, he saw the first signs of growth through the casing layer... then it just stopped.

This is his first attempt at poo, however he has done a few rounds of cakes, and even a few casings with good results.

Would a too moist casing layer stop mycellum growth? If this was the case, could he dry it out somehow or is it now too late?

To make his casing layer, he:
1.) mixed the vermiculite, peat, water and oyster shell
2.) Nuked for 10 minutes
3.) Stuck it in the freezer to cool in a ziplock bag
4.) When room temperature, he then squeezed out the excess water
5.) Spooned an even, non-packed down layer over his casings.
6.) Covered in Al foil, and punched several holes in it with a fork
7.) Placed back into the incubator at 83-85 degrees F.
8.) It's now been a week, with minimal mycellium growth through the casing layer.

He would be absolutly heart broken if, on top of the fact that he didn't win the $160M in powerball, also lost all of his crop!

Thanks!

yeah see your dilema, removing the lid could expose you to contams, but with all the extra water that could be a potential breeding ground also. sorry dont know. never grown with poo before. Maybe the casing layer can be redone, without disturbing new growth.

Sometimes it can take awhile, patience is a key to this hobby.
Good Luck

But what if waiting DOESN'T pay off?

What if my friends intervention is Required in order for the attempt to be successful..

I mean, if he did something wrong, then all the waiting in the world would be in vain.

It will,
unless yoiu contam before hand, just mist it if it seems dry, you just aren't suppose to mist pins, if you have no pins you can mist if it seems dry, it will most likely work.

thanks. your condolences are appreciated.

oh yeah... thanks for the tip too..

As far as coir... how can you visually tell if the moisture is correct? (there are plenty of pet stores around here, but it all seems to be chips... will that work?)

if it is in a rubermaid container cut some holes it it and put a HEPA filer or some other good filer over the holes and that should alow some air flow, you culd also put a few fans on the filter patches to improve air flow coir changes color when it is wet and dry very easy to see the difference
