Anyone have recommendations on a good beginner DSLR camera? I have done some research online and the two that I am considering are the Nikon D300 and the Canon Rebel T1i. From what I have heard, the lense is almost more important than the camera itself, but I don't know anything about these cameras OR lenses lol.
I picked up the rebel in a kit with this lense and a carrying case for $750 at costco just to try it out. It is amazing so far but I don't think I want to spend this kind of money.
Any photographers in teh house?

You bet. Any of the cheaper dSLR's will do. A second hand camera may be an option as well, and second hand lenses are usually a good choice, since they set you back a lot less. However, if you intend to buy second hand stuff, make sure you buy into a system that is used widely, since it'll make it easier to find what you need second hand. That basically limits your choice to either Canon or Nikon (the Sony/Minolta could be an option as well, but offers no real benefits compared to C/N).
Other than that, you basically can't go wrong with this. You'll find that for good image quality, your photography skills will be at least as important as the equipment you use.

I've had my eye on the Canon T1i since it came out last spring. If money weren't tight I'd have bought it already. I've always been a fan of Canon cameras. I sold all my old Canon 35mm film gear last year though. I had 2 Canon AE1s and a Canon A1, all around 30 years old, give or take a few years. Didn't even bother keeping any of the lenses when I sold them since they won't fit the new DSLRs.
But yeah, the T1i looks nice, I'm sure I'll get one when my finances sort out. If money were no object it'd be nice to step up to the new 7D or even the 5D. But to be honest the camera body won't make the biggest difference. All of them are great cameras now. The biggest difference (and the biggest expenses) come with the lenses you purchase. A really top-notch lens can easily set you back much more then your camera body did.

I use a rebel XTi, and i love it, i still have the stock lens, which gets me buy just fine for basic shooting, takes wonderful photos...i am looking to get a new telephoto lens, 300-700mm, for a lot of zoom, but the lens itself is more than the whole camera and stock lens, so been putting it off...lol.
Anyways, i buy all my camera equipment from www.buydig.com, they are a GREAT internet seller IMO and have great prices all the time. I even ordered my 46" samsung tv from them, the first one they sent was broken, the screen was shattered, and it took 10 days to get here...so when i refused the delivery and called them to let them know, they got me another delivered the very next day, purchased it from some local warehouse in my city, and had them get it to me pronto, wonderful service...
Anyways, i would recommend the canon, but only because i have used it, teh Nikon cameras i have heard are great as well...

is the camera you were looking at, but if you want a dSLR and want to save a little money, this kit would be great to start with too IMO:

again, i have the XTi, which is definitely not a top of the line dSLR, just an entry level, but for someone who just shoots casually, wants pictures of the stuff my family does, etc. I see no need in getting anything any more expensive for that, as this 'entry level' one does absolutely everything I need, and probably more...lol

Nice, I'll check into the XS too. The only thing that worries me about it is that it is only 10 megapixels. On one hand, it's only a little more to get the 15mp t1i, and that's a big performance increase. On the other, my gut tells me that it won't make a difference for my work.
To give a little background, the thing that prompted me getting a camera is primarily for my little sister. She wanted to get some senior pictures done for her high school yearbook but the local places were charging upwards of $400. Well, for that price, we could pretty much get a decent camera of our own. My mom knows that I mess around with photoshop, so she is willing to finance part of the camera so long as I take my sister's pictures.
Would the XS be a good choice for portrait work like that?

i'm really diggin this t1i!

yeah, you could easily get the same pic...and seriously, between 10 and 15MP, its useless unless you are going to do some MAJOR cropping and/or enlarging of your pics.
here is a fun pic of my cat, made with my xti and stock lens, there are many more pics in my gallery, some with the camera, im sure you can pick out which

remember, im a crap photographer too, so i don't really try THAT hard, but i do enjoy taking pics...here is one of some pot

here is one of my cactus, next to my slowly wilting banana tree:

Many choices, ultimately it depends on the type of photographs you want to take the and the glass/lens system you want to invest in. You'll end up spending many times more on lenses than you will the camera body, so you have to make your choices based on what you need most, and how much you want to spend. Nikon and canon have the most extensive but expensive lens sets, Pentax is good, it just doesn't have a huge range (they're starting to expand), I have a Pentax, so I'm not dissin' on them, just the truth.
In the end it's what you want. Go to places and ask to check the camera bodies out with the desired lenses, ask if you can take some shots and let you take the shots home (on your own chip) to see how you like the quality.
DSLRs are wonderful tools to invest in, but are pricey.
