Where do my fellow Canadians order their filter discs??
    #11535738 - 11/27/09 03:00 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I'm getting ready to start up another project. Going to skip the pftek this time and try grains. So I've been searching around on the internet for materials, specifically synthetic filter discs. My problem is the ridiculous shipping costs associated with these things. From Myco Supply, shipping costs as much as 20 discs:eek:. Fungi Perfecti won't even ship them to me. I get this message:

'No Shipping Methods are currently available.
Click the continue button to complete order.
You will be contacted at a future time about shipping. Or
Click back button to change shipping address.'

I have also checked a myriad of other online shops, with similar outrageous shipping prices. What do my Canadian brethren do? What do my American friends suggest? I quite like the idea of using these filters, and do not want to mess around with poly-fil (unless I'm using it to stuff the holes in my monotub, but now I am getting ahead of myself)

Is anyone aware of any Canadian based mycology/scientific supply shops online (or any other kind of shop that carries these). I wouldn't even mind ordering a sheet or filter paper and cutting out the discs myself if that was an option, so long as I'm not paying $20 to ship 20 discs.

Damn you Americans and your readily available mycology supplies that presumably ship for really cheap! *shakes fist at* :shakefist:
jk

Oh now I know what you were talking about. I couldn't figure out what the hell you were talking about.

I dunno, can you vouch for the quality of what he is selling? I think I'd rather just go the traditional route.

PS - Over $50 in shipping for 24 filter discs from Sporeworks! Maybe I should think about polyfill...

well what are you using it for?
and yeah i can vouch for him.
same thing here, it wouldve costed me around $80 to get filterdisks sent to me.
hes got the filter disk material on a roll i think. just got enough from him to make 50+ disks. its thicker than the stuff from vendors tho...

I want to use for filtered gas exchange on grain jars inoculated with what will probably be B+. To keep contaminates out, basic purpose I guess. This roll of polypropylene filter sounds like a neat alternative. So you have used it then? And got low contam rates and all that?

yeah for grain, the only thing i ever use anymore is micropore tape. double layered. most ppl dont put 2 layers, i do

dont make things too complicated.

one hole in the jar lid (1/8" - 3/16") covered with micropore, inoculated, then covered with micropore works always

i also like using the plastic wide mouth canning lids

No, your right. Simple is good. I'm thinking I'll just use a tyvek paint suit. Those seem to go a long way. Those filter disc kajiggers just seem like a more long lasting alternative. It really bothers me that it costs so much to ship something that has virtually no mass though. Probably always will. Oh well.

Its going to be light out soon. I should go to bed

i was thinking of making up some lids like noobie's, but with silicone instead of that fancy injection port. so one side a small inoculation hole with silicone, the other a larger hole for air exchange with what will now be tyvek glued on with more silicone. I bought a paint suit today, which better be made of tyvek, and a member is also going to trade me some sheets for some cyan prints. I knew I printed so many mushrooms for a reason:biggrin:

just me, I am in a basement suite, if that's what you mean.. or the PNW of BC if THAT is what you meant

youre going to have to replace the silicone after a few uses
and it pulls off the lid if you havent siliconed inside and out

i meant the latter. i was wondering why its so expensive to ship to you

I think it might be some weird American vs. Canadian dominance/power struggle thing. Heh. Who knows?

Yeah, these are the same kind of lids I'm going to make, but with tyvek on the outside of the lid

Thanks for all the input all

Sorry for the asinine question, and the double post, but are any of you familiar with Bennett brand Coveralls. I bought some earlier, thinking they were the right type of material. Now I realize it doesn't say anywhere on the package just what the material is. I think I may have wasted 9 dollars.

Love the micropore tape idea.. after I knock them up and cover the holes again with the tape, would I still put tinfoil over the top of the lids? I usually went with polyfill and tinfoil over top.
Thanks for your thoughts!
