In the Quest for information...
    #1147621 - 12/17/02 02:39 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

High All,

i was wondering, where can someone un-educated in fungi, find information that will be necessary?

For example, i need to know what is the optimal temperature for mycelium growth on substrate for Reishi. Those little information is valuable! I suppose Stamets' books are giving details for those species that are covered by the books, but is there a site with growing and habit info on a variety of species? Something like an encyclopedia i suppose

Thanx!

In the Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms there are over 30 species covered.

I agree with Anno: GGMM is probably your best resource, and it's fairly recently been given a facelift too.

Have you considered joining a local mycological society or getting in-touch with a local Government or university culture library for information too?

And living in Greece prohibits that somehow? *confused*

There are some good resources in France I can put you in touch with if there are no culture libraries in Greece.

have u ever read Franz Kafka?
well, only his books can describe the bureaucratic system that exists here.

i am extremely interested in those resources in France u mention; dont speak french though, but i would like to learn more, perhaps its what i need.

thanx!!

There's also quite a lot of resources in Italy; is your Italian better than your French?

I'll dig out some addresses for you.

Do you really not have a large university in Greece that has a large biological department that might have a culture library? Maybe you should be starting a culture library if that's the case.

Stamets books contain most of the data that you need. For example you can apply data about woodloving species to all other non-described woodlovers.
One thing about these growing parameters is that they vary from strain to strain of the same species and you have to find out parameters by experimenting if you get your strains from wild or from spores.
Here's a FP list of fruiting temps for their cultures: http://www.fungi.com/cultures/cultures.html

www.atcc.org (filamentous fungi and yeasts) and http://www.dsmz.de/species/fungi.htm have a large collection of cultures and data about them, like suggested culture media and their formulas.

For example culture media for mycorhizal Amanita muscaria:
Malt extract 8.0 g
Glucose 7.0 g
Asparagine 0.5 g
Casein hydrolysate 1.0 g
KH2PO4 0.5 g
MgSO4 x 7 H2O 0.5 g
Yeast extract 1.0 g
Agar 15.0 g
Distilled water 1000.0 ml

we do have. i didnt say we are from outer space, i just said that bureaucracy is so dense and hostile to people that my answer to you could be: "so, what?"
i cant go anywhere and say i wanna learn, i need a pass to lend books from this uni or this dept. there is no such possibility. :frown:

pls PM me whenever you have those addresses  thanx once more

Teleomorph = sexual reproduction.
That probably means that the culture is a dikaryon - capable of forming sexual fruitbodies. That's good, that's how it is supposed to be.

They're not for "use in humans" because it wouldn't be good to inject  the culture in veins or something like that.
