What books should everybody read?
    #1146674 - 12/16/02 05:30 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I feel lame not reading anything - I finished my last book over a month ago and feel useless without latching onto a good book every night.... what should be worldwide required reading? What should I check out? Awesome books anybody?

I have a hard time finding material that I can get absorbed in enough to finish it. Good fiction does help me along it seems.  I don't know what to recommend for you.  I personally enjoy Kurt Vonnegut's stuff. Jerzy Kosinsky was a good writer of fiction.  Interesting stories with a surreal bent.  There's just so many great writers.  I like stuff from all ages and places.  Right now I'm not reading anything again.  I recommend Stephen Crane's short stories for casual reading.  They are usually 1-20 pages long (small gems of vivid realism written with witty humor in my opinion).  Hemingway and Steinbeck are great. I like Crane better.

Yes thanks - I've read several books in my day, Mr Mushrooms

and Frogsheath,

I recall reading Vonnegut's "Welcome to the Monkey House" a while back. I really enjoyed most of them, so maybe our tastes are a bit similar - I'll look into Kosinsky and Crane, and am of course familiar with Hemingway and Steinbeck. Thx for the tips man.

I'm also looking for non-fiction studies on like the origin of man, or just general philosophy and whacked-out ideas and things like that as well as fiction.

Vonnegut is good. I read Timequake, Slaughterhouse Five, and something else I believe; and liked them all. Now I'm enjoying Steinbeck immensely, but I'll be switching gears soon. The days, I find of late, are bitterly terse. And unseasonably warm, incidentally.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Vonnegut is indeed one of my favorite authors, and I have read a lot of his stuff, lesse...Breakfast of Champions, Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse Five, Welcome to the Monkey House, The Sirens of Titan, God Bless You Dr. Kevorkian, Mother Night, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, Player Piano, Timequake, Hocus Pocus, Palm Sunday(not your typical KVjr work), Wampeters, Foma & Granfalloons(again, not a typical work).

I think there are a few out there that I have not read. I will get to them eventually. All are good in their own ways, even the last two I listed, though I think you have to be a Vonnegut fan to appreciate them. I would highly recomend The Sirens of Titan or Mother Night to anybody starting out with Vonnegut. It is hard to pick an "introductory" novel to Vonnegut, not that you need one because you have read his stuff. I really would like to re-read some of those titles, but sadly my collection of Vonnegut books has been scatered to the wind. I've stopped loaning out my books.  I did however pick up an older copy of Welcome to the Monkey House this summer from the first class lounge of Union Station, Chicago, this past summer on a layover. It was like finding an old friend.

I read doors of perception online somewhere, and completed brave new world right before invisible landscape  I really like his writing - he's very descriptive and really knows how to "zoom in" on a thought with words  I'll look into these other works of his as well - thanks man

My favorite is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Keasy (sp?). Such a great book, another great book is Catch 22, its an easy, fun, interesting read.

The Death Ship, by Bruno Traven, is my all time favorite book. Other good authors: Orwell, Bradbury, Huxley, Genet, Sartre, Nabakov, Salinger, Ballard, Burgess.
