Yeah might be best giving a wide birth. If you're on the lookout though there are tons of piles of hardwood chips all round the countryside by the motorways and, more suitably, A-roads this time of year as roadside vegetation takes it's annual pruning or new junctions etc are being built. Some of these piles can be immense, I'm suprised I haven't crashed salivating about them

Can anyone confirm if the Tower 7 Litre PC from Argos is okay for working with grains?
If anyone has this PC and could also let me know the best size jars to use that would be really helpful,
Thanks!

Dunno anything about that one (link?), but a bunch of us have used the Prestige 6L hi-dome, which Argos sells - or used to. It's small, but it does the job.
If you're doing PF-tek, consider using drinking glasses (search this thread for lots of comments about that).

Thats the one ive got at the moment. Fits in 500ml jars no probs but not lires. And its 12psi so gotta run it longer when sterilising. So if you have more cash get a better one but if your as skint as me it will do

Okay nice one. How many jars can you squeeze in and what sort of time do you run for a good level of sterility?

You can get six 500ml jars in with a nice bit of space around 'em for the heat to do its stuff. I usually run it for about two hours after its got up to pressure (~about 140mins in total i guess)
You can only fit in one spawn bag at a time with couple kilo's of substrate tho. Think thats pretty poor compared to other sized pc's but hey it does the job...

I wouldn't get anything that can't do 15psi. Less than that isn't recommended, though it might be able to do the job (with PF cakes, say). Much better to get the standard 15psi (the prestige, for example) and then you can follow all the standard teks that assume 15. You'll be able to do grains with more confidence, etc.

I wouldnt buy jars either. I reuse all my food jars if they are a good size.
I used a 6L prestige for about a year. It worked but its not ideal. If you are jsut doing pftek or some small bulk like a mono or two you could manage.

50 grammer slammer XD
do any of you guys use coffee and gypsum in your grain soak for growing your stones.
Wen i soaked my grain ... about 6l dry grain in a bucket i rinsed yaddah yaddah and added a couple dessertspoons full of nescaffe' gold blend! and a table spoon or so of gypsum. left to soak and then wen i boil it up to raise temp i boil in fresh clean water. I only mention all this because growth seems slow in my jars, its taken 2 months for some of them to fully colonise and show signs of sclerotia formation. im just wandering weather i shouldnt have bothered messing with the coffee, i think its stunting the growth :S
hoping that eventually i will get sum nice stones. ps. strain is mex A on rye grain. using m.s lc. think Im just going to have to be more patient and tweak the process next time.
dont think i'll be going for the 50 grammer slammer though lol

Spoons of Nescafe' isn't really the way to go. Make one cup of nescafe per the recipe, add that to your soak water. Gypsum is optional but helps. A pinch per jar is fine.

I've had success with the woodlovers with Chipsi Extra Reptile Bedding, made from beech and guaranteed fungus/mould free. Come in a variety of chips sizes which is useful.
I've also learnt the woodlovers colinise composted chips faster and have just discovered J Arthur Bowers Composted Bark, will report back as soon as know it really is suitable.
