I'm just parroting info from Damion's thread. I haven't gone the coir route yet Thinking about it though. It takes for ever to properly pasteurize 10L of substrate in a bag in a pot of water.
I'm going back to the a modded version of Damion's tek though. Sub poo for coir, and use 180F water, not boiling water

Hey Tetriana here's how I fit my jars in (I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't done it).

If you place your top jar at that angle the lid should just slip on and off without having to fight it. Took me a few practice runs, that top jar is CLOSE to the top of the cooker.
5.
I dont even have 1L jars. I might get some soonish. We'll see how my current jars fit in the pc.

Woo hoo. Thanks.
I wonder if that reconstituted coir is any good? It would be a hell of a lot easier to make half batches if the normal stuff wasn't in bricks. Have you ever tried getting one of those cut in half?
Coir bricks are easy to cut, I use a normal wood saw. They cut nice and clean.
I just noticed that the free sample is one tiny ass piece of coir, not worth the effort IMO.
Very good prices on that site though if you buy in bulk but if you only want one or two to try out you can get it at pets at home for £2.69
They aren't easy to cut for me.
I did try every kitchen knife I own.

Stab a small, solid knife (carefully) in between the layers and twist, you should be able to cleave the block into a few usable pieces which can be snapped smaller by hand. Its also much less messy than using a saw.

Layers? The bricks I get are rock solid.. no layers.

Oh yes those i did get them off ebay but they have no more. I missed your post on hamoafs thread, ^post^ made me check it out. Dont get the HDPE ones they are shit, they are meant to keep labs clean but puncture way too easy even when they have not been autoclaved. They should ban the HDPE ones especially when working with bugs, its feckless trust me.
Here are some links, I do need to stock up. I caved in a bought 20 unicorn bags.
http://www.appletonwoods.co.uk/acatalog/Polypropylene_Autoclave_Bags.html
Autoclave bag, Polypropylene, 660 x 305mm are the ones you want for blocks and logs. For 500 of these its £105 inc shipping and 20% tory CUNT vat, or £28/ 100 if bought in smaller quantitties. These are the cheapest I can find. Ive always wanted the big ones for substrate prep/pasteurisation but never used em. Another plus point is they last AGES ive been using the same bag for SD prep for about 8 months and its still air tight. Warning the blue ink will leave marks in your PC.
This place also has the good vials for slants, these are practically unbreakable, youd need hammer.
http://www.appletonwoods.co.uk/acatalog/Heavy_Walled_Glass_Sample_Containers.html
the 28 ml ones. A bit pricey but work out about 80p/ vial shipped but i have yet to break one. I need these so do most of you .
There are these too works at about £55/ 200 inc VAT and postage http://www.intscientific.com/catalog.php?category=Bags%20-%20Autoclave

Badman, I've just made a load of spawn bags using the unicorn bags that are recommended to 135oC on Annie Millers site. The Appleton bags you posted are up to 160oC. So two questions really;
I still find the bag crumples and distorts after PCing and with my problematic history with spawn bags, I am expecting holes somewhere. Do you thin the Appleton bags would fair better?
If so how do you go about using these for a spawn bag?
Cheers in advance

The distortion is due to changes in pressure its normal for the most part just dont heat up or cool the PC too quickly. This goes for making spawn bags with the appleton product or any other. The unicorn bags are thicker, built for purpose but the appletons can be used with just as much confidence. I wouldnt say they are better but they are cheaper and you can get more sub into it. Its rare that either of these bags will get pierced, unless they were manhandled.
To make em... 1. Cut a hole, near 'WASTE' about 20 by 20 mm
 2. RTV silicone around the perimeter of hole about 5 mm behind the hole 3. Tyvek square glued on 4. Blob of silicone flattened out if you need a injection port.
  5. Wait overnight for RTV to cure 6. Sterilise and noc up
Or you can spawn grain to pasteurised sub in bag

Very versatile as you can see.
