I read that they are similar to shitakes in flavor and texture. Perhaps I will put them in a noodle soup with some miso and egg noodles. Making myself hungry. Did your friend say they were bland?

The ones I have seem to have slightly thinner stipes and darker caps. Could be geography? Mine also do not bruise yellowish. Just darken in a natural way when the flesh is crushed.

Those are indeed Armillarias.
You should be aware that Armillarias cause more poisonings than any other edible mushrooms. If this is the first time you're eating them, limit your eating to 1/8 teaspoon or less, *very* well cooked. If you don't get sick overnight (most people don't), then you're OK.
Be *very* sure to cook them completely. If they are even a little less than completely cooked they are poisonous (probably most poisonings happen because of this). The positive side is that the poisoning is only a night of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Unless you aspirate your own vomit or already have serious health problems, you won't die if you're poisoned by them.
Happy mushrooming!

Thanks! I have heard of GI upsets from Honeys, but I didn't know it was so prevalent. I will proceed with caution. Sounds like the consensus is that they generally aren't worth the risk? But yes, they were the fruit of an otherwise fruitless hunt that only turned up scores of Boletus Satanus and Sulphur Tuft.

While I do agree with what you say I do have to disagree with this. When you eat a spoonful of soup it is usually a tablespoon, now divide that in to three parts, you now have three teaspoons. Throw away two of these and take your remaining teaspoon and split it up into eight parts, that's how much 1/8 of a teaspoon is. Try this with your cereal at breakfast tomorrow... Even with very toxic fungi this is probably not enough to make you sick.
Eat a couple of tablespoons the first time but like ToxicMan says cook them well.

I' m not crazy about them when there are others to be had, but they're a decent mushroom. I usually leave them though because I'm more interested in oysters/parasols at this time of year. I saw a beautiful cluster of giant honeys yesterday. They really grow to huge sizes. You can also find the black old stems MONTHS after you first found the pins. The mycelium can stretch for miles at a time - truly an amazing mushroom scientifically. culinarily - eh it's ok

I think the warnings on Honeys are a little bit overblown, I have never met anyone or heard of anyone getting poisoned or gravely sick from them. I think as long as you cook them thoroughly, you'll be fine. Just like with any new food, some people may have an allergic reaction, but I don't think it would be hospital worthy or anything. The worst you'd get is a stomach ache.

I had the runs from eating honeys that I must have undercooked. Taste was pretty ordinary too, so I'd agree that they're not worth the hassle
