Interesting pigments, hence the name Gliophorus versicolor. The specimens were not perfect due to them being a bit dry, if only I got to them a day earlier! inski.

Looks a bit dark, could that be Lycoperdon umbrinum?

Thanks guys,
Alan, as far as I can tell the six known species that have been recorded from New Zealand are Lycoperdon perlatum, L. scabrum, L. spadiceum, L. glabrescens, L. microspermum and L. nitidum, the images that I viewed of L. perlatum had a wide variation in colour with some being very pale and some being quite dark like these specimens, G.M.Taylor's water colour of L. nitidum looks very similar to this collection so it could be that species also! I have also come to the conclusion that the Gliophorus species is in fact G. lilacipes due to the presence of cheilocystidia, the colour of the fruit bodies had me confused but I now realize that G. lilacipes is an extremely variable species, especially in colour, G. versicolor lacks cystidia.
Scout24, the unfortunate insect is a cicada, parasitic fungi, slow but brutal killers!
Thanks Karode13, in the past I had suspected the fungi that got the spider to be a Cordyceps species but recently was informed by Clive Shirley that it was Gibellula pulchra, I'm really interested in finding out how quickly these insects succumb to these parasites! inski

Yes it would be interesting to know its entry point and how it works its way through the anatomy of the spider. Very cool!
Wonder if it works through its limbs, non-vital organs keeping it alive and then finally attacking the brain. Insect larvae do a similar thing.

I've got Rickenella fibula all over my backyard too. I've had a bunch of Paxillus all over the property lately too.
Nice pics.
