A proxy is not the proper way to get away with p2p file sharing.
For one, its not a good idea to send gigs and gigs of data through some random server somewhere. Also most p2p transfer programs can not use web proxies.
The right way to do it is to set up your p2p software somewhere else - preferably on a well connected server out on the internet somewhere.

What form of p2p were you using. I would recommend subscribing to a good newsgroup provider that offers SSL encryption. Astraweb or Giganews are good ones. Astraweb's unlimited service is $11 a month. Get familiar with using newsgroups and using the SSL you can dl relatively "safely".

Good idea.
Even without SSL, newsgroups should be safe to download from. Since you are not uploading to or downloading from untrusted clients who could be with the MPAA, there will never be any copyright violation letters to deal with.
I use a Linux console bit torrent client on a server in texas. If the MPAA comes calling its just some server in a colo somewhere, not anyones house or personal connection.

I also got busted downloading a movie, and was forwarded an email from my ISP, the MPAA had contacted them about my IP being in the swarm on a torrent. I promptly called my ISP to ensure they did not give out any of my personal information, as they are not allowed to according to their privacy statement, and they did not. What i did was just delete the email, i DID NOT contact the MPAA, as doing so was more or less signing up for a fine/charges being brought.
From that day forward, i quit using torrents and just figured out newsgroups, they are superior in all ways to torrenting. Now the only time i use a torrent is for something i cannot find on newsgroups, which is normally older stuff that i find i want. Anything is available new on usenet just fine, and also downloads at a consistent rate every single time and there is absolutely no uploading, unless you want to make a posting. The MPAA and the like just get really pissed at people uploading their stuff, and that seems to be MORE of a problem than just downloading it.
I agree with alan, use newsgroups instead of torrents for everything possible, torrents are only a last resort IMO.
peace
