GORNYHUY'S BULK SUBSTRATE CALCULATOR SPREADSHEETVERSION 3(ish) Calculate substrate content for perfect bulk grows!
- spreadsheet-based substrate calculator that uses a width, length, and depth of your actual substrate to calculate volume
- if you have a non-rectangular substrate, simply overwrite the total substrate volume (cell B32) with whatever volume you have measured from your spawn bag or cup or whatever.
- enter percentages of ingredients and see what precise amounts to use based on your desired substrate volume, depth, and spawn ratio so that you can hit your "perfect substrate depth" with your "perfect recipe".
- Includes metric version
- Includes Excel version, OLD Excel format, open office version, etc all zipped up into one file.
- Instructions are at the top of the worksheet, and its fairly easy to modify it for your own custom needs.
If anyone finds any errors, or has requests for version 3 please let me know.
Zip file is attached to this post.
Ratings are appreciated! If you like, stick it in your sig!

I tested this last night with a bulk run... Worked well, very precise, but I think I "short-changed" my coir when prepping it because its so damn fluffy. Possibly same on the poo. SO - when you are measuring, err toward too much substrate material.

Sounds nice, but doesn't seem to work…?
It asks for missing links at opening, and I get lots of cells with #NAME? or ### in it.
Tried with neoOffice 3.0.1

Hmmmm strange... I haven't tested it outside of MS Excel. I wonder if its trying to find a different worksheet or something?
I'll take a look and see what I can find out.

Very strange, as I can't ever open it with MS Excel, ahah
I unzipped the .zip folder, get a gornyhuy_substrate_calc_v2.xlsx file, that won't open with anything than neoOffice
Every day I get more and more convinced that MS softwares are curses placed upon mankind…

Well, I tested it by uploading it on its own to google docs, and it works fine - doesn't try to find any other documents, doesn't throw any errors, and calculates fine.
I'm guessing it has to do with neoOffice puking. So - I've saved it in an old Excel 97 format and even as an open office format and zipped all that up in the main download file for you and anyone else who runs into issues. Hopefully that will solve any compatibility issues.

Thanks gornyhuy! It's nice to see someone looking out for those of us that refuse to use M$ products.
*edit* The ODS and xlsx versions still give me the "$name" problems, but the regular xls version opened up just fine in open office. Nice work.

1 quart = approx .95 liters. 1 pint = approx. .47 liters.
It's almost a 1:1 conversion, so if you go on the premise that 1 quart is pretty much the same as one liter, and 1 pint is half a liter (500ml) then your ratios end up being the same, you'll just have a tiny bit of left over material.
*edit* Of course, I didn't think about the calculations for volume. I'm sure gornyhuy can rework the math for metric, but if not I might play around with it when I get a chance. Should just be a matter of multiplying a few numbers to convert to metric.
*edit 2* I see where some of the calculations are. One pint dry is 33.6 cubic inches by this calculator. That is 0.000550 cubic meters, or 16.387 cubic centimeters. I'm not sure where I was going after that.

I don't, but it would be pretty easy to convert it. I'll upload a metric version later today, but will need someone to sanity check my conversion numbers. I just don't think in metric.

You should convert the this little app to a javascript/html page for easier use so everyone can use it. If I had the time I would do it myself.

there is a simple substrate calculator in the #feelfamily chat room (in the text chat section of this site)
just type !binq <L> <W> <D> and it will return how many total quarts you need to fill a bin to a certain depth (D is desired depth) use !binl for liters
all measurements are in inches
Code:
<Slimz> !binq 12 24 4 <FeelBot> For a bin that is 12 inches long, 24 inches wide for which you want 4 inches of substrate, you will need 19.948051948051948 total quarts of material

Very sexy... Love that its in the chatroom like that. I like to do stuff like this in a spreadsheet so that anyone can edit or expand it to their needs and use it offline.
I was always turned off by the older calculators that required you to install a .exe file.
