Penningtons Wild Bird Feed

I am about to cook up some jars using this, but i noticed that it had sunflower seeds in it, will this stuff work out?

Also, how long should i steap the seed for?? 45minutes? does steap mean with heat?

Hear is what I did "this time". Poured seed into large stock pot. added water to cover seeds approx. 2"over. App;yed heat while stirring till temp hit 165F then turned off burner. Left pot on burner while it cooled stirring occasionally. Let stand for 1 hour till seeds looked like they could not take any more water withought bursting. Skimmed of anything floating. Placed cleen towl in a large strainer and poured seeds on top to drain. Let seeds drain and stand for 8 hours (I was gone). Placed seeds in jars and PC'd for 90 min.

My first try with the penningtons I got ended in green mould. It did not seem to come from outside contam because it only became visible once the seed was poured out :frown: Also I did not soak the seed prior to my frist batch so the "Bird-Kote" was still on the seeds which may account for somthing.

I have yet to see the result of my current test, but I am hopfull :smile:

Also, to anyone who has had sucess with wild bird seed, After soaking do you add more water? I could not find any tek's that soaked and then added any but you never know. I also did liquid mycelium injection in varying amounts from 3-10cc to test different liquid content and growth.

Here what I do I let it sit in tap water for 3 hours( some let sit for 8 hours) then let it drain/wash it off with tap water then let it dry out for a hour or so then I put 2/3 cup WBS then 1/3 cup spring water then I put on my lid and PC for 60 minutes at 15 PSI I have not seen any contams when doing it this way yet. with PC it with the water in the jar the WBS will suck up that water fast. thats for pint jar for Quart jars just double it once out of PC it will be about 3/4 full.

how are you venting the jars? Polyfill or filter disk?

I use polyfill then place 3 coffe filter on top of that then put aluim foil on top of that kind of loose but tight.





I leave the bird seed in it I have not seen anything bad with it yet. I seen growth from 3 to 7 day after I innoc. depends on the strain.

I soak my seeds for 24 hours, then rinse and allow to drain for 30 min. Then load into the jars and PC @ 15 psi for 90 min.

to prep seeds i do:

putr in large container (1-5 gallons)
fill with water 1-4" above seeds
mix it up
remove floating sunflower seeds
mix it up
remove floaters
mix it upo
drain
fill it up with water
mix it up for a few mins
dump

use in whatever tek you would use in

(my cat uses grain for simple minds... whiskers figures when they say pint they mean half pint, and doulbles quantites as it has on there...)

yes. this stuff works just fine. kramer has had much luck with birdseed that had sunflower in it.any birdseed/flax/brf/verm combo seems to rock. even plain birdseed kicks ass.

There is no need to remove any floating husks, or sunflower seeds. These add lignin ( a good thing) & do not harbor any more possible contam than does the millet. It is all going to get thoroughly sterilized - anyway.
