I normally see little white fibers on day 4-5, but it can take longer... Usually syringes are faster, but I've seen plenty of growth on day 4 with prints too.

It varies.

A few n00b questions sorry,

1. what temperature do spores get destroyed at?
2. Does contamination occur wants once mycelium starts to grow or before?

thanks!

So this "Golden Mammoth" head shop strain is, so far, putting out super tall and skinny pins, I can't relate them to B+ or anything like that.  The pins are about an inch tall (they're seriously still pins) and mega-skinny, like maybe 2-3 mm.  They are so tall that the pins start out collapsed and then begin to stand.  Consistently, too.  It may be a unique strain.  Can anyone match this to an existing strain?

I suppose no one could help me.

I have recently inoculated some jars using the PF method, with brown rice flour and vermiculite as well as making a honey LC. I inoculated them with spore syringes i made myself with saline solution (dont ask me why i did it i just assumed it would be ok).

I have kept the jars at room tempreture 75-80F and have left the inoculation holes open for gas exchange for almost 15 days now and no mycelium growth/ no contamination.

I have searched the effects of saline/sodium on spores but find conflicting views. Is there anyone who can give me a 100% answer as to whether i am doomed myself from the start by using saline solution. Or will the small amount of sodium in saline make no difference?

1. Most fungal spores 'die' somewhere around 130F if the exposure is half an hour or longer.

2. Before, During and After...
contams can pop up at any given time.

Great question!~

I wish you had asked this in the main forum, rather than in this thread, so more people could see it.

I was pretty sure I had the answer to this question...
but I called RR on the phone and confirmed it.

Saline = Salt solution

Salt's ph is way too high, like Bleach...
so it is toxic to them.

Plus I think it's very possible that the salt would dehydrate the spores and pull out all of the moisture from them.

Salt was used for thousands of years to preserve food...
and to this very day, Brines made with mostly Salt are still used to make Smoked fish and Beef Jerky.

So YES you doomed yourself from the very start.

Ahhh thanks for that,

No wonder i am getting no mycelium growth. However! over the last day or two in my LC i have noticed little white particles almost resembling dust which seems to like the bottom of the jar. I could be wrong but is this not the start of mycelium growth? But there is no growth in the PF jars?

If it does turn out to be mycelium and continues to grow as normal, will it have any effect on any of the future processes? (because it is toxic to the spores) e.g pinning, edibility of mushrooms etc etc?

i think what you see in sediment
the salt more than likely killed your spores
if you see anything growing in the LC i wouldnt use it
your best bet would be to start over

Vermiculite in syringe-Bad? [Re: pblcenmy1]
    #11525945 - 11/25/09 12:18 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Hey all!
I'm new to cultivation and inoculated 10 jars with a syringe using PF TEK. At some point during inoculation, it seems that a few particles of verm got sucked up into the syringe (pretty sure it's not spores, big pieces...). How did this happen and is the syringe now contaminated? I have almost half a syringe with a few big pieces of verm floating in it, stored in unrefrigerated sterlite til tomorrow.  Any info would be great as i am very green to mycology.

it should be fine as long as your jars are sterile
i have had this happen too
and they all worked out for me

I figured as much, that verm was sterilized in P.C., so thanks for putting my mind at ease.

Sweet thanks Noobie, I'm sure I'll have many more Q's in the following weeks! One more thing...I'm also new to message boards and computer tech like this...I'm wondering if it is allowed to talk about specific spore vendors and their viability/reliability because my first vendor has gotten 50/50 responses in reviews and i just want to know if i should stick with that vendor or find a new one right away because i would like to order more soon. I am using one of our sponsors currently...Thanks
