christmas lights
    #1142911 - 12/15/02 10:18 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I have a few questions about using christmas lights. Does anyone know how much heat they give off? I was thinking about using them in a foam ice chest under a towel with mycrobags on top and then removing the towel when it comes time to initiate pinning. And also how do they work for lighting? If anybody knows anything about this just let me know and it would be very appreciated. thanks

i think that the whole "towel in your terrarium" thing is possibly a bad idea. i know you're growing in mycobags but, towels and clothing and anything like that tend to harbor bacteria and molds which could be hazardous to the health of your funguys. try cutting a nice hole in the lid of the cooler and duct tape some plastic wrap over the  :laugh:hole. then use one of those clip on lights above it. that clip on light should heat things up pretty good, that is if heat is what you want. then if it gets too hot or something you can just place a jar of frozen water in there to cool shit down. let me know if that helped.

Christmas lights seem to work fine. I'm guessing that due to their size they really shouldn't give off too much heat. If I were you, I'd put my light source outside of the terrarium.

They give off very very little heat, which is why they're safe to wrap around a dead tree.

Hey its so odd you posted about this...
My friend.... currently uses a rope of christmas lights. and the other day he walked ijn his room and his room smelt terrible ...... so then he went over to his lights and saw a jacket that was melting on them.
Anyhow they work  fine other than when your shit is melting...heh
Ive noticed that i lose a few percentage points RH when i turn the lights on for 6 hours or so.... to counteract this, my friend has rolled up wet paper towels around his cakes.. hopefully this wil help out.

They will be in a colder area and i need something to stabilize the temp, and for lighting when it comes time. also if any one has good cheap humidity idea that would be a help. thanks alot

a cheap walgreens ultrasonic humidifier 39.99 or something like that. it will also provide a good bit of heat but, not too much. also there's one brand that they have in particular that perfectly fits into 1 inch plastic tubing. i'll edit this post when i get home and tell you the brand if you want me to. i have it run 15 times a day for 3 minutes at a time and it does the trick. if thats aou of your budget then perilte(home depot, lowes) for humidity and a clip on desk lamp for light and heat will work o.k. but not excellent.

If you're looking for humidity, try sticking a small hose from a fishtank pump into a small bowl of water in your terrarium. I tried that in a fishtank with no perlite and a huge hole at the top of the thing, and within 10 minutes, there was small condesation of water on the sides. I'm not sure how this works, or even if it works, I might be doing it wrong. If you can deal with the bubling noise and the humm of the fishtank pump, I'd say this is a good idea.

BTW, if anybody knows, does this actually work? Or was something just weird when I did it?

My friend uses christmas lights within a rubbermaid container, and when he does so he does notice a rise in the temp. Normal temp is 75-77 when light is on its 76-79.

fishtank heater makes 0 noise. it was 40. but he bought a decent one. he got two rubermaid containers, cut a hole in the bottom of one, bought a "o" ring the size of the fish tank heater to block the hole between the container and the heater. then he cut a hole in the second container up higher and placed a hepa filter over the 3inch hole. he then placed that container into the container of heated water. inside the growing chamber he has perlite, and a fish tank bubbler. fish tank pump is in its own smaller rubbermaid container with a hole cut in it with a hepa filter. connected to the growing chmaber by a tube. xmas lights are secured to the lid of the growing chamber.
