Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

I know that certain helvella species have been consumed, but they are only considered edible after thorough cooking. Nevertheless, I wouldn't dare try these myself. The toxins in helvella and especially in gyromitra species can be pretty nasty.

I've tried them.  They were pretty good.  Just cook the hell out of them, and try and keep a few windows and doors open, and don't inhale the vapour that cooks off.

People around here eat them and say the flavor is like morels.  They are often dirty and hard to clean however.

why? I have never tried them but might. They grow all over the freakin place down here, but you probably already know that.  Is the vapor toxic or something? Or what is the toxin?

Gyromitrin's product of hydrolisis is monomethylhydrazine (MMH), a colorless, volatile, highly toxic, carcinogenic compound, first discovered and used for it's hypergolic properties in combination with nitrogen tetroxide. MMH is used by NASA as rocket fuel, which should give some idea of what is meant by "volatile".

And can cause cancer........Fuck that!! Fuckin rocket fuel. Not in my mouth. Blah I can't even stand standing around at gas stations...

It cooks off...  Cooking eliminates most if not all of the gyromitrin, and any amount that remains is insignificant.

Conversely, all edible Agaricus species contain a carcinogenic hydrazine, agaritine, which is poorly eliminated by cooking; usually only about a third is actually removed by cooking.

You should probably stop eating Agaricus too, they might give you cancer.

Well.. I would say that I would rather get cancer from eating Agaricus.  Kinda like :gethigh:
