there is no real answer
When Alice in wonderland was first written Lewis never intended for there to be an answer
it was suppose to show just how mad the mad hatter truely was, asking riddles with no answers.
Although over the years so many people have tried to answer it, the riddle has taken on a life of it self.

Do a search on Google and i'm sure you'll come up with tons of pages discussing it.
